Robocalls and SPAM Calls on a Cell Phone

I was using a Xiaomi phone that I bought here in Taiwan.

I recently changed phones to an LG phone that does not seem to have that feature :frowning:

You sure it wasn’t a recording. I got one the other day that sounded like he was really there. It was from someone like an older Taiwanese uncle or master of ceremonies guy youd meet at a wedding or gathering.
He paused in the right place and it took a couple of seconds to realize it was a tape
I actually like telemarketing/surveyOk people after being one for a couple of days. That’s all I could take
Pressure to get positive responses from bosses, hostility from your customers or participants.
And if you take a few seconds and chat with a customer for little human interaction your boss gets on your case for thatxtoo.

These calls are breaking telephones as a communication system. I’m just not answering unknown numbers most of the time. Hope it’s not anything important.

So true. But you can’t just ignore calls from unknown numbers. Last year I got a call and I thought it was another spam call, still I answered and was ready for fucking with them a bit… But it was the police, I just had left my wallet and someone took it to them. There are more examples.

What I do now is to not answer the phone if I don’t know the number and look it up on Google. There are websites that list annoying and scammy numbers and if it’s from a known business or service you’ll likely find it too. Then I either block the number or call back or wait for them to call again.

I’ve done this for a bit and it went from almost daily marketing calls to none… For the moment.

I know I shouldn’t. But it’s been months since I’ve got a useful call from an unknown number - and way too many times I’ve been walking in the rain and gotten a call that I’ve tried to answer and then the bluetooth earpiece doesn’t quite work so I need to disconnect that and I’m getting wet because I’ve had to put down my umbrella and ARGH it’s a robot calling.

Just remember that banks don’t call you to check your password and username, accountnumber.

Oh, if someone with adequate English calls me and claims to be from a Taiwanese bank, the English is a 100% sign it’s a scam!

My concern is more like people who have changed cellphone numbers, or co-workers whose numbers aren’t in my records. Or, most seriously, university admission departments following up on references - but those are going to be international.

I do answer each calls if I got spare time to listen.
One time got private number and didn’t answer it, little didn’t know it was my boss
Boss: why your not answering my calls?
Jo: sorry your # is in private lah

I don’t exactly recommend this APP, but it does a pretty good job at identifying the actual caller (including family overseas, banks, delivery companies, spam business, etc.). It was recommended by my manicurist.

Positives: it works in many cases where other default Android functions do not. It is also tuned to the Taiwanese context. It is fairly accurate, from my experience.

Negatives: requires a large number of unnecessary “permissions,” such is the permission to monitor your phone call history and contacts. Additionally, the APP itself is kind of spammy in that it promotes its premium services quite frequently. The interface pretty much interrupts any phone call or text message, which can sometimes be annoying.

I’ve installed and uninstalled this app quite a few times. It definitely has its purpose and function, and can really identify the callers that you want to answer. I think you just need to give it a shot to figure out if it will work for you.

Definite no to that app, full of spam ads. Just install Phone by Google
