ROC to PRC and the USA

Can anyone explain to me why the US and the rest of the world switched recognition to the PRC from the ROC?

The US did it at a time when the USSR had approx 160 divisions with 20+ based in East Germany. The US had about 16 divisions and only about 2 1/2 in West Germany. The US just wanted to give the Russkies more targets, so to speak.
