Welcome back to our special “Rude and Selfish Drivers (April 24, 2012)” … This mother is teaching her young daughter how to park a motorbike … She’s off to the bank, so the first rule is to not care about anybody else, just park your bike in the middle of the doorway… “Forget those other free parking spaces just off to the right, I am too lazy to walk the distance”…
I have a whole collection of photos of cars (mostly fat businessman types strutting around looking important) parked on the pedestrian crossing on the big main road into Danshui, blocking an entire lane of traffic.
I was going to email them to the police. And then I had a think about it, and figured my time would be better spent trimming my toenails. The end result would be much the same, except that my toenails would look better.
I presume I’m not the only one that has often wanted to actually walk over those cars: pull myself up onto the hood and walk across, perhaps stomping a bit more heavily than usual, following the pedestrian crossing line. Of course, I never have, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it … but it’d be nice.

And remember, “stupid, rude and selfish drivers” aren’t restricted to Taiwan. Please see international owners lists of BMWs, Mercedes’, Audis, Volvos and almost any model of 4x4 for reference.

Actually it wasn’t meant to be an insult, sorry if it came across that way.
I am posting as a foreigner, but on the odd occasion (not commonly) I have been known to go with the flow and park my vehicle illegally, but never in a doorway. It was a poor attempt at humor in this case it seems

Odd thing is, coming where I come from I think they have big noses …

My schnoz would definitely be in the large category compared to most Taiwanese
Re: the topic on hand, I do agree that parking across walkways and in bike lanes etc is inconsiderate, but eventually the longer I stayed in Taiwan, the less it bothered me. It was just something to be expected, just like everyone on the road who drives dangerously. It didn’t even faze me after a while at all, and to be honest, I missed the way things were done in Taiwan when I went back to Canada. Strange eh?
Horror - easy to define…
Romance - easy to define…
Action - easy to define…
Humor/ Humour - Bloody hard to define!
There are big differences in humor between Japan, Germany and various other nations…
But what North Americans/Canadians often do not ‘get’ is how dry ‘humour’ is in U.K and Australia.
And funnily enough, even my four ALL TIME fav Hollywood comedies, are hated by most American critics and audiences…

Once, being a Newbie in TW I played with the idea of creating a Forumosa “Hall of Shame” picture gallery. One how we - guests of this country - judge the local non-law-abiding citizen.
When doing my calculation - observing 30-50 infractions on any other day - I refrained from this idea. It takes law enforcement efficiency while educating a sense of responsibility - something which is not stated to do in most of our mission statements. Sigh…

A few of my students have told me about some sort of program where you can photograph/videotape traffic violators and send them to the authorities. After which you will receive a percentage of the fine. Apparently there was some guy on the news who made a pretty decent living by doing this.
I’m thinking about doing this myself but I just don’t know how it works.
The OP’s image was why I hated living in Danshui. Things like this happens all the time, including so many scooters parked right on the entrance of a building that I couldn’t get out… I was thinking of getting a chainsaw to help clear the bush…
It’s not nearly as bad in Taipei, but it depends on the area… the older districts (like the area around Whayin st. near Taipei main station) is pretty bad while Tienmu isn’t as bad (probably because of all the expats).
Its safe to say enforcement depends on the area you live in.

I’m not gonna defend Danshui. Frankly I think the police enforcement of that district suck shit. However, I do think that the OP can report this and be compensated (i.e. cash) for the prosecution of this jerk :bluemad: (well, it’s more like infraction). I drive through that section a few times (mostly on weekends) and it really buggers me that douchebags would park their cars there. I doubt he could get away with it during busy rush hours.
If the OP doesn’t mind, just send those pics or present 'em to Danshui police station and see if you can get compensated. I would if I were you.
One time I was waiting at an intersection with cops directing traffic, and a lady hailed a cab who stopped right at the intersection. Well the cab for some reason did not immediately drive away, but waited forever and backed up traffic. The traffic director screamed at the cab and I saw the passenger get out and the cab drove on.
I thought they were talking about making a law saying that a cab can only stop at designated cab stops, where did that go?
