Running your own server: software suggestions?

I was thinking about running my own server for fun and education. Naturally, I’m not competent at Linux or apache or anything like that, so security for the server is quite important.

I was considering using xampp or wampserver utilities which include everything: apache, etc… Is this a viable route? I know some of you run servers and stuff… it always seems a might fussy and complicated to me.

I looked at simpleserver, but I wondered about its security, too.

Best

I think debian in great, but the apple server is pretty might too.
And if you set it up properly your win2003 server will be fine too.
Depends your budget and your preferences.

No need to install a new OS. Just download and run Apache… it does the job fine. I’ve used this before.

I think XP Professional has it’s own server. Look in the add/remove programs, windows components. There’s a IIS something or rather… that’s meant to have a web server.
