Sandman's new phone

sandman won a telephone at his company weiya, without even having to attend. Yee Ha! Trouble is, in addition to having adopted the irritating habit of referring to himself in the third person, sandman’s a total tech numpty.
The phone’s a Sony Ericsson Z710i. Is it any good or is it a lemon? And I guess I can jsut swap out the sim card form my existing phone, even though its a Nokia. Also, what about numbers stored in the Nokia’s phone memory? They won’t transfer via the sim card, right? How can I get them from my old phone to my new one, short of writing them down and entering them manually in my new phone?

The new one has a 2 megapixel camera in it – that’s even more than my fricking regular camera!

You can just swap the SIM but as you suspect the numbers in the phone memory won’t transfer. So copy them to your SIM first, if you have enough space. Or transfer the SIM, then copy into the new phone. Now put the SIM back into the Nokia, delete it (make sure the numbers are really in the new phone!), copy from phone to SIM and put the SIM into the Sony Ericsson.
However note that some information may not be copied onto the SIM, like additional details beside name and phone number.

Thank you Rascal. As I said, though, I’m a moron when it comes to these kinds of things, and I have no clue how to transfer numbers from phone memory to sim card memory. Ach, I only have about 20 numbers stored in any case – probably just as easy to write 'em down and do it by hand. Modern technology will NEVER own me. FREEDOM!!!

But is it an any-good phone?

It’s probably got Green Tooth or WeeFie so you could connect the infra-red thingy to the new SIM card and just transfer the names and numbers over the ethernet. Or possibly just ask the wife. Or RTFM.

Actually on second thoughts, don’t RTFM. You’ll only end up throwing the thing out the window.

This review has some good step by step instructions for using it.
Looks like its got an FM radio in it.

Why do I have this vision of Scotty in Star Track: The Whale One when they go back in time and he’s sitting in front of the Mac and keeps saying “Compewtah! Compewtah!” And the guy says “Ah, sir, you have to use the mouse.” So Scotty picks up the mouse and starts talking into it: “Compewtah! Compewtah!”
The Z710, an EDGE-capable clamshell with a camera that will appeal to the hard working person looking for a phone to fit an intensive business and private life. This handset includes a suite of advanced business and multimedia features in a sophisticated and stylish design.

Business-friendly features include push e-mail support and RSS feeds for news updates and traffic reports direct to your phone. PC tools include synchronisation of your phone book and calendar as well as USB 2.0 support. A 64MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) is supplied that is expandable to 1GB and can be used to store and transfer any type of multimedia content, including text, graphics, video, stills and audio files.

The Z710 also features the Access NetFront full HTML browser. It makes web access on the move as simple as on a PC and EDGE speed means pages download rapidly. It also has the latest Bluetooth 2.0 with HDR (high data rate) for fast data transfer with other Bluetooth devices, providing robust, quality connections for accessories such as wireless headsets and handsfree car kits. The Z710 also supports Bluetooth streaming in stereo (A2DP) so you can enjoy the full stereo power of the phone’s media player completely wire-free.

The 2 Megapixel camera captures sharp, crisp stills and video and these are easily shared using MMS, Bluetooth, stored on the Memory Stick or transferred quickly to your PC via USB.

When it’s time for you to switch off, the entertainment suite includes a high performance media player and FM radio with RDS. The media player supports all of the common music file formats, including the new e-AAC+, which dramatically reduces memory space and download time.

The clamshell design allows for a large external LCD screen. This allows many functions to be performed without opening the phone. By using the direct keys next to it, the media player, FM radio, SMS message review, previewing tasks and diary appointments can all be accessed and controlled.

The Z710 is a Quad-band EDGE/GPRS phone available in Twilight Black or Metallic Sand and starts shipping during Q3 2006.
This is what I found. I understand the words “camera” and “radio.” You CAN use it to make phonecalls, right?

“For the time being it’s one of the best proposals among youth-aimed clamshells.

OK then…

OK OK OK. Anyway, I suppose the first thing to do before anything else is to charge it up fully, right? Against all the odds, I actually succeeded in getting the back off and installing the battery without breaking it.

And all this bluetooth and infrared stuff and everything – I suppose I’d have to pay extra for that stuff to Chunghwa or Fareastone or whoever it is I pay my phone bills to (I have no idea what company it is), right? I wouldn’t be able to just start using these features?
And I don’t need to inform that company that I changed my phone, right? They get all my info off the sim card or something, right? So I don’t need to do anything in that regard?

Have you downloaded the right drivers ?

(just joking)

Write down your 20 phone numbers on a piece of paper. Put that in your wallet for reference, or key them in on your new phone.
Put the SIM card in, charge the phone, make phonecalls.

Nothing to it.

Forget about all the other stuff - if you need it, you will figure it out.

You don’t have to tell them jack shit.
And you can use IR and Bluetooth straight away, but you’ve probably got no use for them.

Hold on, let me rephrase that… “Having read this thread, I can let you right now that you will never use IR or Bluetooth.”

Cool! Remember to get me some pics the next time you’re mud wrestling with Irishstu.

You can use them, it does not require the operators approval nor do you need to pay anything for some of the functions. Assuming the functions are supported by your phone you can for example use the infrared to transfer data (like phonen umbers or pictures) to your PC/laptop or use Bluetooth with any (wireless) headset/earpiece that also supports Bluetooth. This is all free of charge as it doesn’t involve the network, though obviously you need to purchase the headset/earpiece yourself.

Only if you want to use infrared or Bluetooth to surf the internet (PC/laptop talks to phone, phone to GSM network and GSM network to internet) you need to apply for GPRS service and pay the operator.

No need to tell them, just transfer the SIM and you are ready to go.

Instructions on how to copy phone numbers from phone to SIM on most Nokia phones:

Press / select “Contacts”
Scroll to “Copy” and select “From phone to SIM card”
Select “All”
Select “Keep Original” *
Confirm by pressing “OK”

* This keeps the numbers in the old phone (as backup). However you can also choose to delete them from the phone by selecting “Move original” instead.

Thanks for all your advice folks. I feel a lot less daunted now. This is the very very first time I’ve ever owned a phone that wasn’t the cheapest offered by the service provider shop. Feels a bit strange – apparently it costs around US$300. I think NT$800 is the most I’ve ever paid for a phone!

Rascal, that’s great. It worked, so I’m all set. Change the sim card, charge the phone and I’m done. Yeah!

Now you’ve just got to make some friends so you have someone to call. Paid phone sex doesn’t count.
