I was introduced to Sappho by Ken (drummer of the Kenyatta Trio). It is a mellow bar, not too busy the few Saturday nights I have been there, with friendly service.
Drinks are not cheap, but they sure know how to make a bloody strong Kamikaze, so it’s worth it.
They have two kinds of sofas, in the back they are comfortable, but if you want to be close to the band then you will have to put up with the most UNcomfortable sofas imaginable.
So far I have only been there to listen to the Kenyatta Trio (I’m a big fan of the guitarist, Ray), but they have an interesting line-up and I must go there a bit more.
I love playing Sappho, although I always feel I should be sporting a giant Afro, flares and platform-soled boots when we play there. The laoban is one of Taiwan’s loveliest ladies.
But you’ll be going elsewhere this Saturday if you want to see Abe & Co, jands. Watch this space.

Not sure who the Laoban is, I met the slim women who works the bar (she is awesome), and also a more voluptuous women who, I think, may be the one you are referring to, she was also very friendly.
Last time I went to Sappho I took my mum who was visiting (again), and everyone there was SO polite, friendly and welcoming to her.
Mum also got dragged up to the dance floor by an EXTREMELY pissed, YOUNG American guy…who apparently told her she was the “most beautiful woman he had ever seen” while gently stroking her arms and gyrating around her.
My 63 year old Mum had a great time
I’m doing a scuba diving course at the moment, so won’t get a chance to see The Kenyatta Trio this weekend, but I will definitely be back for more. I think they play at Sappho on the last Saturday of every month.
