Screwed up Chinese Subs-what am I doing wrong?

So, been downloading a ton of Chinese movies to improve my mando skills.

A lot of the movies I find do not have subtitles…or they only have English ones.

When I do find subs, like on shooter.cn, when I watch the movie they come out as complete and total gibberish (I watch them in either bsplayer or vlc…same effect)

wtf do I do to fix them?

First, verify the encoding of the file you have. If you’ve downloaded a file that’s in traditional Chinese, it’s more than likely Big5. Simplified Chinese is usually GB2312. You can verify it by dragging the file onto a web browser window and selecting different character encodings from the View menu. Once you know the file encoding, make sure you set the Default Encoding in VLC correctly and set the font to Arial Unicode MS.

Why don’t you download PPStream or Funshion? Then you can watch tons of streaming movies and TV shows in Chinese with Chinese subs.

My Chinese aint THAT hot yet.

First I watch the movie with English subs.

Then Chinese subs (pausing here and there to look up the pesky word, or just to slow things down).

Then try with no subs.

So I actually want to down load the actual file.

Thanks for all the help.

Got it to work based on this, for some reason bsplayer cuts off the subs and begins sort of overlapping characters ontop of one another at the end of the line, but works swimmingly in VLC.
