Hi Everyone
Can anyone give me information on this dog - breed, etc.
I am considering adopting him, but I don’t have much information on him. I will meet him tomorrow and he has already broken my heart.
Also, just how big do you think he’ll grow?
I live in an apartment, and want to take him in. I’m worried that he might grow too big. In the long term, I would take him home with me if or when I leave Taiwan.

well i think its a mixed dog, for the size on the pic i think he may grow to be a medium size dog… i dont think it would be a problem for you…
Yup, he’s a mutt. Probably not good for anything except a lifetime of loyalty, devotion, and fun. 
Looks like a classic shepherd mix. I’d put my guess at final weight 45 lbs, maybe 50 if it’s a boy though his feet are not gigantic enough to suggest a truly large dog.
Maybe smart, probably loyal, probably medium to medium-high energy level and exercise requirements. Shepherds usually aren’t terrible chewers but they can go that way if they’re left alone too much. Sometimes they will herd other pets or children and if it’s not addressed, that can be too much for some small people. But mostly I suspect that this is not going to be a dog of extremes.

I am looking forward to meeting him. He was abandoned and found outside an army base. Some soldiers took him in. I’m told he still can’t walk properly. Do you guys have any advice for looking after a newborn pup?
Start some basic training immediately and never reward unwanted behavior, no matter how cute it may seem. 15-20 minutes a day of training should do the trick. I’d guess around 15-17 kgs. Good luck with your new best friend 
I will meet him in a few hours and take him to a vet to get the necessary shots and check up. Any idea how much this will cost? I have no experience in dealing with animals in Taiwan. Haven’t had a pet myself in years.
Can anyone give me some tips on training him to pee in the bathroom and not in my room?
My place is pretty small, and since I’m in an apartment, and won’t always be here, he’s going to have to pee here anyway. My place is all tiled, so the clean up operations haven’t been too bad so far. But I do want him to go in the bathroom. How can I achieve this? Should I buy a special tray or mat or something? Should I place his bed near the bathroom? Should I keep him in the bathroom until he goes? I have tried the latter for a while, but he begins to whine and yelp, and I don’t want the neighbours hearing him. He doesn’t seem to really like being in there at all. If he pees, or if I think he’s about to, I pick him up and put him in the bathroom, but he wants to run back out straight away. A few times it’s worked for me, but he doesn’t pee a lot, and then he’ll end up peeing again somewhere else. Today I noticed he went in the bathroom while I was out, which I was happier about. Any help on this is greatly appreciated! He’s about 5 weeks old, but has only been with me since Thursday night. I’m a newbie when it comes to taking care of a puppy but I’m doing my best.
Wherever/whenever he pees outside, you’re going to have to clean that up really well. And in order not to leave a smell behind, you’ll have to do that with a special deodorizing solution (which you can buy at pet stores). You should place a tray in there with newspaper, to give him a ‘spot’ to go on, and it makes cleaning up easier. When you have the time, give him a lot of water to drink, then crate him, or confine him in a doggy pen, or leash him so he doesn’t have free range. Whenever you think he needs to go, take him to the bathroom, and sit there with him and wait. When he goes, give him treats and praise him profusely. Do this a few times. Before he knows to go in the bathroom, you should not let have him free run of the flat. At only 5 weeks old, he doesn’t really have the concept of holding it in yet. When he feels like he needs to go, he’ll go. When you are out, it’s best to either place him in the bathroom with the ‘toilet tray’ (i suggest using one of those trays that go underneath of a crate (i’m sure you can buy it at pet stores, and i know for a fact that you can buy them at “Doggy House”), and line it with newspaper). Put his bed in there, and give him some toys and nylabones or rawhide chews.
ask the vet to do a distemper test…it’s expensive, about NT400 I think, but many strays have it here and it doesnt hit them untill they are a couple of months old. What I did was, whenever my pup peed, I placed a little shower mat over it(and didnt clean it for a while) So she realised mat means pee. Then later I moved the mat to go over the drain in my bathroom.
bad thing, we went to another person’s house and they had that mat outside their door and she peed on it. Dogs usually prefer to go in the bathroom by themselves…but he’s propably too small.
don’t shout when he pees elsewhere, they have no idea that it is wrong, so that just stresses them out more. We peed in our own diapers for a year…dogs need time too
