Seeking help for Soc. Anth. research on expat life in Taichung

Hi there

I am a British student coming to Taichung for a month to do research for my undergraduate dissertation in Social Anthropology. I am studying expatriate life and would really appreciate some help from all those expats living in Taichung.

I am especially interested in the social scene for expats, the bars, restrauants and clubs people hang out in, societies and groups people are involved in (I know of one football club but would love to hear about other clubs out there) so if anyone can give a heads up about that kind of thing that would be great.

Thanks for any help!

I’d be happy you help you out. When do you arrive?

Thanks! I get there there on the 8th June.

Let me get this straight: you’ve got your supervisor to approve a research project that involves spending a month in Taiwan hanging out in expat bars, presumably drinking and sampling the local wildlife?

You have a guaranteed career as a salesman. Probably selling refrigeration equipment to Inuit.

This might be useful reading before you arrive: yffm.wordpress.com/

You might want to check out Taichung Improv. We are an improv group that started back in 2007 and have been going strong since then. We took a break and are having open rehearsals again for practice.

Email TaichungImprov@gmail.com if you want to hit a practice and/or talk with us. Even if you can’t get to a practice (usually happens on Saturday afternoon), I will be glad to meet up with you.

There was an old Compass magazine that was dedicated to various activities around Taichung. I will see if I still have it. You might find some good contacts that way as well.

Finley - Haha yes I pretty much did, my brother also lives in Taichung so it was to visit him too, my last project was on backpackers and hostels too, which was pretty tough but someone had to do it…

Puppet thanks that sounds great I would love to come along to one of your practices and chat with you, will definitely give you an email, thanks!

Look forward to meeting you.

Let me just say, as someone who just graduated with a degree in Anthropology this year - I am SO jealous you’ve actually found something anthropology related to do here :stuck_out_tongue: I just came for the travel experience - makes me miss school…

Ah well, I guess I’ll just have to wait til grad school to do something fun like that! Good luck!
