Found this gem at my local YA video store, 90 minutes of behind-the-scenes with Jerry as he resurrects his stand-up career after nine seasons of TV.
Unlike the retail DVD, the rental does not have Jerry’s comeback Letterman appearance and other extras.
Still it is 90 minutes of compelling and often hilarious viewing. Laughs aside though, what struck me most was the show’s underlying existentialism, embodied not least by Bill Cosby’s bit right at the end, when Jerry, having come full circle, listens to him expound on what Jerry has accomplished: That along with Ali, Willie Mays and other greats, Jerry had “played the shit of his game.” And that, to paraphrase, nothing feels better than the satisfaction of taking whatever talent one has and hitting it out of the park. I love Cosby’s wisdom.
I never liked his style of comedy. George Carlin is way funnier. You should pick up his book “brain droppings” or listen to his albums. He never spent years and years on tv. He did a stint on Shining Time station, don’t know why he was chosen. However on any given day I think Carlin is the king of comedy.
Carlin is sometimes funny and sometimes too crude for my tastes. He totally lost it for me when he went off on golfers.
Seinfeld as a stand up is pretty light weight. “Who are these people?” His TV show has to be one of the greatest. I hope I can find that DVD.
I totally missed the last three or four years of Seinfeld. The last couple of years of Married with Children. Even the last year of Bob Newhart. Always wanted to see that last episode. Where is nickelodeon when you need it?
Carlin isn’t funny now and wasn’t when his material was fresh 20 years ago. How he ever made it amazes me.
Seinfeld is also about as funny as watching rust form. The guy is totally lame.
I rented the VCD and it sucks. I just watched the first half and most of it isn’t even Jerry. It’s all about some other lame unfunny wannabe comedian. What a waste of 80NT.
Nice grave-dig, but these decomposed corpses are even less funny than when the corporate media and television networks convinced everybody that they were funny, and that if you didn’t get the jokes you were not cool.
I prefer Karl Marx as a comedian: along with his brothers: Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, and Zeppo.
