Senior Presidential Adviser calls the US `arrogant'

So what is it you want to say about this?

Taiwan sucks, of course.

Looks like we are picking a fight with the wrong people IMHO.

Is it me or do the officials in Taiwan have a chip on their shoulder.

Not all of them. But regardless of position, stupid is still stupid.

I fear that with the potential DPP Party victory, there will be more stupid comments like this coming forth from them. I can’t understand the DPP party’s penchant for insert-foot-mouth disease. They ought to know better or is it that they don’t care what the outside thinks? I just don’t get it :idunno: :unamused:

The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter if they care what the outside thinks, but that (outside of the PRC authorities) the outside doesn’t care what they think.

I think they have this propensity since they’re not as used to having official channels to operate with, and they’re not used to operating within the grounds of those channels. They’re used to acting like an opposition party to boot. Additionally, since they were an opposition for so long, people could say what they wanted and there was never a fear that sucha view represented the government or was overly influencing the government. That’s no longer the case.

Finally, I think things just get so mixed up in terms of domestic and international politics-- that makes for some bad statements from the government.

The DPP has to be much more careful on what gets said on their account. It will be very important when there are single member districts and the middle-of-the-road voter makes all the difference.

TaiOanKok,

Interesting comment about the TSU supporters viewing themselves as the opposition.

However we cannot forget that their “spiritual leader” was the former president of ROC, and their political Allies, the DPP, currently occupy the executive office.

That is a very good pedigree. Perhaps they should reconsider if they are truly still the victims on Taiwan.

Lawrence Eyton has an intriguing take on the DPP’s push to the left in this election season in the Asia Times Online (basically it boils down to the DPP realizing there are no swing votes out there, so why not play to the “light greens” who sometimes don’t bother to vote, a la Dubya’s play to the religious right.).

Maybe Koo’s remarks are a part of this rallying of the faithful?

The U.S. doesn’t give a fuck about the rights of the Taiwanese people.

The U.S. wanted a Chinese ally they could count on to reconquer Beijing and turn China into another puppet of U.S. intersts.

Now that the CCP is moving in the direction of capitalism without political liberalisation (much like the pre-Lee KMT), the US sees more value in a united and capitalist China, and corporate America sees Chinese as cogs in its machine, accepting their lot by associating crony capitalism (euphemistically referred to as socialism with Chinese characteristics even though it is neither socialist nor of Chinese invention) with the emergence of a strong Chinee nation due to government propaganda.

The DPP and other liberal and even more radical movements within Taiwan have always been against this fraudulent Chinese nationalism and, by extension, against the interests of American imperialism.

I agree, except the things to remember is many of those who are willing to push radically are not really DPP officials. Their view do not necessarily represent the official party view, because themselves disagree with the DPP’s softer stance. In that regard, they do still view themselves as the opposition, because they kind are.

For people like Koo Kwang-ming, he might have some fancy title such as " Presidential Adviser", but in reality it is not a real job so the title is really just an honarable term only. But regardless, he tends to forget that people in the US might view his opionions as the official statements, so the government just ended up having to clear up the confusions.

IMHO Koo Kwang-ming should drop his title of " Presidential Adviser". It’s better for him since he gets to say what he wants to say, and it’s easier for the government. He should do what formal President Lee is doing, putting pressure on the govnement from the outside, that way it gives the government even more credibility to push things forward.

PS: I won’t be able to be here for a month, or able to view or respond to any further replies. But you guys can have fun without me  Lastly, TAIWAN GO GO GO. Praying for a DPP/TSI victory, that will make my month away very enjoyable

[quote] Senior Presidential Adviser Koo Kwang-ming (辜寬敏) yesterday said blah blah blah! Look at me everyone! I’m important because my lips are flapping! Never mind that my “senior advisor” moniker is a total sham and that I need to pay for ads in the newspapers if I want to make my views known. Old washed up senile arseholes like me are worth our weight in gold, so we are!

PS: Should I be happy to know that I won’t be living in the same city with ac for the next month? ::Kidding:: It’s probably going to be a permanent move too. Ac, I will miss you.
