Serious English Learning for adults

Hey guys. I have little experience with learning English here in Taiwan cause…well…I’m a native English speaker.

For a friend, I’d like to know what the best way to learn English effectively is here in Taiwan as she is unwilling to go abroad to do so. I don’t really have much confidence in many Buxibans having worked in one part time and seen other Taiwanese who can test well but can’t seem to muster simple conversations or any form of critical thinking.

I’d love to hear the opinions because if I see one more textbook that suggests asking people for their blood type is an everyday saying in English cultures, I’ll tear my hair out. I’m looking for quality above all.

i guess people may need to know her current english level and her goal.

Get an English speaking boyfriend/girlfriend.

Do textbooks really have that suggestion about blood types? I’ve never come across such a thing, although I’ve never looked at a locally published English textbook. The cram schools that knock out their own materials because they are designed for Taiwanese learners are always a joke.

Good enough to have basic conversation. Not good enough to work with or deal with English-Language customers. She wants to find a better job that pays more than $35000/m

She’s married to a Taiwanese guy. My Ex gf from Shanghai majored in English in Shanghai and was pretty good at it. Maybe that? I dunno. I’m no English Teacher and was not trained formally and have little knowledge in the matter.

Yes. One of the questions was blood type. Another was astrological signs, of which I am not familiar with. To me, Cancer is a disease and virgins are people who haven’t had sex. The whole lot of questions were questions that purport to be everyday conversation but may be asked once…and never asked again. Another was asking if the child’s mother cooks every day.

In which case she needs to start reading in English every day. Books at her level. Tedious, but necessary.

Ok. Appreciated. What about schooling/classes as well? Any recommendations?

I think this would be a question for English learners.

Are there any English learners here who have recommendations for language schools/teacher/teaching methods?

does she want to learn business english?
