Server certificate

Opera is giving me popup warnings now with “The server’s certificate did not match its hostname. Accept?” This is for “a.forumosa.com”.

I am getting: do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? etc. etc. open this server certificate something something the information is not being secured whatever whatever" EVERY SINGLE TIME I click anything. Mightly annoying.

At home, yesterday, I was getting the https in red and crossed, as if it was not a secured line whenever I signed in. :ponder:

Forumosa’s non-secure server certificate issues start slowly but surely annoying me.

It does not matter if using IE on my PC desktop, Safari on my Mac, or the very welcomed Chrome on my iPad, there are too many issues with non-secure certificates , blocking a smooth site experience with constant pop-ups asking to go non-secure, no possibility auto-accepting login etc.

I simply don’t see the need using a https vs. a http one. " the other site" neither uses it and seems having no issues.

Can Gus or one of the other Tech guys maybe reveal why this can not be solved, or what the suggested solution might be from a user POV?

I do love this site, but if web technology fails, it becomes more a burden than a joy.
Consider this as positive criticism guys- appreciating your work and ownership.

Thanks for the note, ceevee. I am sorry that little seems to have been done on this front. The fault is mine - I am the primary bottleneck in the further development and improvement on the site, and I have not put in the time that is needed.

What I have been doing is making arrangements so I will get out of the way. New administrative and technical leadership will be introduced this summer, and long-needed corrections like this will finally happen.

Specifically to this problem, I am asking our new tech admin to do a fresh install of the forum. Ground up, no modifications. This will mean losing some features temporarily, and it will also mean being relieved of some modifications I failed to implement but believe affect some of the stability and operations of the website (ex. the statistics mod).

We will re-visit the security certificate, and limit its use to the login page. Unlike “the other site”, our traffic is a lot more and much more diverse. So, it behooves us to be more careful.

Once again, I am sorry for annoying things like this. Things will improve, and I hope you will continue to give feedback like this going forward

Sincerely,
gus.

You have another site login thats better than this? It that like a .net or .org on the end instead of .com?

When I write about “the other site” I was referring to other Taiwan-based forums.

We do have a lot of other web ideas in development and most of them would use the same login we have here. This will mean having those logins encrypted using https

I’ll post more as those projects get off the ground. One project that is not currently unified under single login with Forumosa is our Talking Taiwan podcast currently being developed at pod.forumosa.com
