Setting up an ADSL Modem

Anyone know the settings required to setup your own ADSL modem ? I want to replace my existing ADSL modem from Hinet with one that includes a hardware firewall & wireless router.

The router needs: VPI, VCI, Encapsulation, etc. Also do i need to clone my mac address ?

Any info appreciated. :help:

I don’t think you need to replace your modem. You can buy a router and attach it to the modem. Most of the routers I’ve seen have a web-based interface, so you just configure it with a browser.

The main thing to look out for is that the interface is in English. Not surprisingly, in the local market they sell routers with a Chinese-only interface. Of course, that’s no problem if your written Chinese is perfectly fluent, but most foreigners will prefer English.

robert_story is right. Just get combo wireless/router & firewall and plug it into your modem. The Netgear I have is 802.11g and works pretty well.

Do you need VPN? Some have vpn-pass through but only a few have VPN capabilities to get to your office.

Or being able to VPN into your home is nice. In that case, I’d get a NetScreen but those are about $500 in the US and doesn’t have wireless. But it an excellent firewall I’d choose anyday.

My next wireless router will probably be Airport Extreme. Now that they have Airtunes, you can easy stream iTunes to any stereo. How cool is that.

Be sure to stay away from the DI-624+.
and D-Link in general for Wi-Fi… I have one and use the USBG120 as the internal card just didn’t jive with my Asus Mainboard…unless I disabled the onboard adapter. Even still, it never seemed to take very well to my system.
Tried dealing with their local office but they insisted that they had never heard of the issue. I’ve asked around since and have found that some others have had similar experiences. The signal drops from time to time and doesn’t perform the way that it really should or is ment to.

DrayTek from Taiwan makes some very fine products (most have a built-in ADSL modem). If you can acces the configuration panel of your current modem, it shouldn’t be a problem to copy the settings (except maybe for the password).
