I’m looking at flights from San Francisco to Taipei on or before June 13, but I’m getting outrageous fares, even for one-way tickets. OK, maybe not outrageous, but at least US$700. Is this just what I have to expect, or is there a seeeecret way to get cheap fares that I don’t know about? I’ve tried Expedia, Orbitz, EVA’s web site, American ($1000+!!!), and a few others.
I’m going to be spending a year in Taiwan so I don’t think I need a round-trip ticket, but I’ll get whatever’s cheapest! Any advice would be appreciated by my wallet.
OK. I looked at China Airlines and got a quote of US$855 round-trip. The travel agent I talked to quoted $920 and EVA was over $1k. I guess that’s what I get for traveling in high season.
I plan to leave on June 10 and come back in late Jan. Would it be cheaper to get two one-way flights? Probably not, I’m guessing. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get a cheaper flight or should I just go with China Airlines? Thanks.
Check with STA Travel. They used to have a great contract with China Airlines for low season. In June, it might be more though. There are offices all over the place. Their website is www.sta.com, but you need to call them directly, because some of their contract fares are not available off the website.
If you can leave a couple weeks earlier, you will be able to get a lower price.
Check with STA Travel. They used to have a great contract with China Airlines for low season.
Thanks Karen. I went by my STA office today… no such luck: $1200. And a travel agent I spoke to said that the low season tix you’re talking about (starting two weeks before) are already sold out, though I don’t know if that’s true. Regardless, I can’t really go 2 weeks before.
i think you’re routed through Hong Kong first for Cathay Pacific. I had to buy my tickets yesterday–the prices first start going up MAY 21st, then another notch on June 7th for most of the tickets to taiwan. Before May 21st you can get tickets with tax around 500ish I believe.
Try requesting Singapore Airlines, cheaper than China Airlines or EVA and at least I can say better than EVA and prob safer than China. If you don’t mind going through Hong Kong first with Cathay that price isn’t too bad.
…I’ve used flychina.com several times and been very happy with them.
They always seem to have the lowest fares between N. America and Asia.
I just checked SFO to TPE on June 13 and it came up with several fares. The lowest being $584 on Cathay Pacific. The highest being $881 on Korean Air.
i just ordered mine for 830 on eva air for june for the entire summer nwa has gone up for some reason plus there full I couldnt find anything avaiable for when i needed to leave
I know. Stupid security. Once at SFO they made me take off my shoes (tennis shoes, mind you–no metal!) before I walked through the metal detector. Well, ten minutes after I went through the detector, I still didn’t have my shoes back. I was this close || to just walking away and getting on the plane barefoot.
Hmm, wonder if American Airlines has a no shirt, no shoes, no service policy?
