Short-term gym membership - suggestions please

I have just arrived in Taiwan and will be here for 2 to six months. I want to use a gym - probably about three times a week - but I, obviously, don’t want to commit to a 12 month contract.

Can anyone suggest a good Taipei gym that is handy for Da An, that offers either a reasonable day rate or, better still, membership month-by month?

I have already spoken to California Fitness and they offer day tickets at 500 NT or monthly at 5000 NT. This is OK but from what I have read about the place on this forum, I’m not sure I’d want to train there…

Suggestions please… your help is valued.

Thanks.

  1. Buy a set of free weights and use them every day. Core strength exercises.

  2. Climb 101 once a week. As for me? I’m waiting for the Burj Dubai to finish

  1. Hire yourself out to move people’s goods (ask Steve the mover) for a day each weekend…it might not pay well, but how many workouts pay?

You’ll be cut in no time.

The Taipei city owned facilities are nice, and dirt cheap. There is one on the north side of CKS Memorial Hall and one on ZhongShan N Rd. I think it’s only like NT$50 per visit for the weight room, or something really inexpensive like that. They also have coupon books you can buy that make the per-visit even cheaper. Use of the swimming pool is slightly more expensive, I think.

Can you elaborate on the Taipei owned facility? As far as: does it look like a normal building / business but it’s just owned by the city government, what is the place called, etc.?

Thanks so much! I’ve been looking for a place to work out (or at least a park big enough to jog around).

The one I visited was just on the north side and across the street from CKS Memorial Hall. It looks just like any other office building in the neighborhood, so you just gotta look closely.

Here’s an article about the Taipei City facilities:

Gracias! Er… well, 謝謝!

I have a friend selling a membership she has for World Gym - about NT$1,600 per month. Interested?

Do they have any locations near 七張 MRT?

Hey actually, thanks for the offer, but in my US dollars that’s right now over $60 per month. Back home I had a Gold’s Gym that came out to about $35. I think I’ll try that public venue that was mentioned, but I do appreciate your post.

WorldGym is just a 5 minute walk from QiZhang MRT. That’s where I joined after Alexander closed. I pay 1200/mo, but that’s for a 2 year agreement and paid something like 3000 enrollment. More amenities than the Taipei City facility, but no pool.

I used to be a trainer at Golds in San Francisco. The memberships rates at Golds were the most reasonable in the city.

From what you’ve posted, the Taipei City facility sounds like the best fit. You could also check out Taipei Gym. They have a location across from NTU and one in Ximen that I know of and their rates are really cheap, but not as cheap as the public facility.

Wow, even better, I just found out that as part of ICLP you get an NTU student ID card. Maybe I can use that for NTU’s gym.

I’ll have to see if it’s actually the same as a regular student’s when I get it.

This one sounds pretty good, and I found more info about it.

It actually charges NT$50 per hour for the weight room and NT$110 per visit for the swimming pool.
Alternatively, you can choose to pay the monthly rate NT$1500 and use both the weight room and the swimming pool.
It’s their website for the one on the north side of CKS Memorial Hall. It’s called “Taipei Jhong Jheng People Sports Center”

World Gym Membership for sale? SEAN!!! Is it still available? I’m moving to Xindian in a few weeks and need a membership (and maybe a cat as well). You seem like the man to talk to (even if most people say not to!)

1600 is pretty steep.
I think World Gym has a promo on now for like 1100/month.
I could be wrong though.
