Shortening?

I don’t even know if this is to be found here in Taiwan, but figured I’d ask. Also, if it is, the chinese translation would be helpful. Thanks.

Which kind of shortening are you looking for.

lard is available at Wellcome(Ding Hao), next to the meat section in tubs…looks delish! Or it may be very tasty floor polish as I can’t read characters.

vegetable shortening like Crisco is also available. Now, let’s see, where did I buy that? :s Definitely not the Wellcome (Ding3hao3) supermarket nearest me, in Donghu. I checked there today. 'Twas probably at Wellman’s up on Zhongshan N. Rd., just a little south of TAS.

Go West on MinSheng from Jungshan North toward DiHua area and the warf. Turn right on MinLe (about 1.6 k from Jungshan) As I recall, the food importer is at 125 MinLe. The have all manner of baking and cooking foods and appliances. Among their stock is Wesson brand shortning in about 1 kilo cans. Reasonably priced and convenient. They also have repackaged bags of what looks like the same stuff but obviously is much cheaper by the bulk bag.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I actually didn’t specify- I’m in Taichung. There are Wellcomes here so I’ll check them out.

And who can forget this childhood classic…
Shortenin’ Bread Lyrics

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread

Put on the skillet
Slip on the lid
Mammy’s gonna make us some shortenin’ bread
And that ain’t all
Our mammy’s gonna do
She’s gonna cook us some coffee, too

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread

I slipped in the kitchen
Raised up the lid
I stole me a mess o’ that shortenin’ bread
I walked up to a pretty girl and I said
Baby how’d you like some shortenin’ bread

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread

They caught me with the skillet
They caught me with the lid
They caught me with the girl eatin’ shortenin’ bread
Six months for the skillet
Six months for the lid
Now I’m doin’ time for eatin’ shortenin’ bread

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread

Shortenin’
Shortenin’ bread
Shortenin’
Shortenin’ bread

Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ shortenin’
Mama’s little baby loves shortenin’ bread
Baking stuff is really rather easy to find all over the island. I have never seen much of anything I wanted for baking in the local consumer groceries. Get someone who has an excellent command of Taiwanese to call or walk into any decent sized bakery and ask for the location of their supplier. There are the so called DIY stores all over the place but they are usually in the back alleys or low rent areas and supply bakeries with powdered sugar, packaging supplies, etc. They will also carry shortning, pans, thermometers, bulk chocolate, etc. Remember that baking is simply not done by consumers so looking for baking supplies in a grocery store is like looking for T-Bone steaks at the local carnage shop.
All that being said, if you still have no luck, pm me and the next trip we make your way to see family, I’ll see what I can do to help.
