I’m heading to Hong Kong next week, and was wondering if I should get an ipod there or in Taiwan. Would HK be much cheaper than Taiwan? Another question I have is if I could have it serviced in Taiwan under the warranty. I don’t want to be mailing it off to HK if there’s a problem.
Also if anyone knows a good place to buy an ipod in HK. I’m also in the market for a pair of quality headphones (Sennheiser or Grado most likely).
I live in HK but came back from Taipei on Monday. I was price comparing iPods. Adjusting for the currency, they are within 10 NT of each other. It doesn’t matter where you buy them. Apple has done a great job making sure there is no price discrepency between HK and Taiwan…buy it in Taiwan, where you live. Then the iPod will fit Taiwan wall plugs. Otherwise you will have the added expense of buying a HK-TW adaptor/convertor…
The price differential is not so clear cut anymore it seems.
For example, a Panasonic LX2 was grey market 13k in Taiwan, 17k full retail but 3400 HKD semi full retail.
An Apple Macbook was cheaper in Taiwan by about 2-3k TWD (which I was prepared to pay a premium for the input software and keyboard) once you included the haggling and free goods.
There are some good Apple stores in Causeway Bay like Designer Group Company
Shop 1118 - 1121, 11/F In-Square, Windsor House, 311 Gloucester Road Causeway Bay Hong Kong. There are 2 floors of other computer and camera stores and prices and service vary greatly from store to store.
That said, there are a lot of shady dealers in HKG. Ask HCG for more details. He knows a lot more than I do.
