common conflict avoiding culture, similar currency denominations, cars avoid honking, overly polite, etc
Face culture, living in apartments in the big city, city people avoiding sunlight, liking Korean dramas and music , enjoying small informal restaurant dining, night markets , going to temples to pray, hot humid and sweaty ,dogs running around, cost of living fairly similar.
Not just the T. They’re both pronounced “Tai.”
SE Asia historically has had higher status for women than East Asia.
It’s an interesting phenomenon observed in history that ‘barbarians’ treated women better than more advanced, civilized societies. The Greeks and Romans were highly misogynistic. This fits in with the overall pattern of societies becoming more unequal as they become larger, wealthier, more complex, and technologically advanced. So that medieval southeast Asian women were treated better than most women in China and Japan is hardly surprising.
The Greeks loved boys deeply.

That’s true of most of Asia east of the the Indian Ocean. Taiwan is nothing special in this regard.

China has 3 or the top 10 beer companies, so it seems they drink a lot of beer (that is very light)
I just saw a news story about sexy dancers at a Thailand funeral. I have heard of this before in that country, and does it not happen in Taiwan as well?

Think it happens a bit in China…probably borrowed from Taiwan.
Or reintroduced? The Chinese diaspora in Thailand have had a heavy influence on the culture there. They didn’t fully colonize, but it does explain a lot of the similarities…
When the decreased was over 70 years old, in some traditions their passing should be celebrated. Maybe that’s where the dancing started. Many plains indigenous peoples also sang and dances during funerals, and it could be carried over.
The thing is the sexy girls. Sexy dancers seems uniquely a Chinese(Taiwanese)/Thai thing…
Any dance is immediately more celebratory with sexy dancers.
I think it’s just an extension of the idea of celebrating a life long lived. It’s not like these places traditionally had pole dancers or bikinis going back hundreds of years.
You know other places have funerals without sexy girls though, right?
