SINGLE people and permanent residence

Hey guys, I’m just interested to find out. Is it possible for people who do not marry (ie gay people) to get permanent residency in Taiwan? How long do you have to wait and whats the procedure? Is it difficult or have ‘single’ people succeded?

Thanks

Do you have an ARC? From working I know that you are eligible to apply for an APRC after holding and maintaining (that means unbroken for the whole time … not even one day of overstay or gap) that ARC for 7 years. Plus some tax requirements, etc.

I’m sure other people know more details about the ins and outs. But yes a single person who holds an “unmarried” ARC for 7 years in an unbroken manner can apply for permanent residency. (Although it’s only 5 years for the married folks … )

That totally kills my plans for trying for an APRC. How ridiculous.

Forgive me, but have you actually been here yet? I really wouldn’t plan that far ahead about going to a country you know very little about and where you (I’m guessing) cannot speak the language. This place really does have some unexpected surprises in store when you get here.

Sure, come here for a year or two then decide what you want to do, but don’t put your eggs in one basket. if you were born in 1983 as your handle suggests you are but a wee babe.

I have to ask, and you can go nuts at me if you want, but is your gay status the reason why you want to get permanent residency?

Simple answer to simple question is yes it is possible and there are a number of ways of getting it. Talk to Llary or Taiwansatellite.

This is an interesting question. Hopefully LLary will respond with a post.

This is incorrect. You actually need to be on an ARC for 183 days in seven consecutuve years. The ARCs do not need to be the same and there can be gaps between ARC as long as you reach the 183 day threshold in each year.

Having said that, police stations around Taiwan often do their best to prevent foreigners from getting APRC status by creating extra requirements such as the ones delieadalish described. You must insist on submitting an application and make it clear that you are ready to file an appeal if you are rejected. A great deal has been written on this topic in these forums. Please have a look around. An APRC can be hassle to get, but is well worth it, especially for unmarried people.
