Could someone tell me how to translate ‘Sino-Tibetan group of languages’ into chinese, please?
Could it be as simple as 中國西藏語言類? or an abreviation of that?
I’ve seen 漢藏語族 (han4zang2 yu3zu2), which is short for 漢藏語言家族 (han4zang2 yu3yan2 jia1zu2).
jia1zu2 is a better translation for group or family than lei4, which just means category, kind. Also, han4 is more appropriate for anything Sino-, for example Sinology is han4xue2.
The Sino-Tibetian group of languages has two main subgroups, Chinese - 漢語系 (han4yu3xi4) and Tibeto-Burmese - 藏緬系 (zang2mian3xi4) .

The “Sino-Tibetan” category is widely accepted, but more from inertia and political convenience than because of any real scholarship in its favor. Obviously Tibetan and Chinese have similarities, but the jury is out on whether they grew out from a common source, or whether Tibetan came to sound more like Chinese due to increasing cultural contact. If it’s not related to Chinese, then it would have to either be Indo-Iranian or (just barely plausibly) Altaic.
