I got a logitech wired optical mouse, it works fine but every once in a while the cursor will jump to the corner of the screen, especially when the computer is done processing something. I dont know if its a hardware thing because it happens even when I reformatted windows. This creates a great annoyance in games…

It was suggested that the jumping and sticking might be caused by a virus but I didn’t find anything.
I tried the rather drastic approach of “disable all hardware acceleration”, which has helped although not completely got rid of the problem. There are grades of hardware acceleration; if you don’t want to disable it altogether you can still select the degree, and this might help.
i have the same problem - same mouse. i am running mac though.
I was getting jumping and skipping problems with a couple of different mouses.
I think it was Miltownkid that suggested a mouse pad. I dislike mouse pads and just use the desk surface. It does the same “jumping around”. However, with a mouse pad the cursor doesn’t. You might want to try this easy check to see if it fixes the problem.
This seems to only occur with an optical mouse. I’ve got a wireless optical mouse at home that never jumps on my black desk, but my wired optical mouse at work jumps all the time on a beige desk. I’m sure using a dark mouse pad will fix it. If not blame Miltownkid for disinformation. 
I think laser mice don’t have this problem. Mabye buy one of those 
Note: Buying a mouse pad built for optical mice (read, an one color matt finished dark blue) took care of the mouse jumping problems I was having with the mousepad I bought from the Museum with the fancy painting of goats.

Yes, I think different optical mice have different characteristics. My former Microsoft mouse was kinda finicky.
My Apple Mighty Mouse is doing well with both my home dark wooden desk and my work beige; and it’s my favorite among every mouse I’ve ever tried.
well i shelled out for an all black mouse pad and it has solved the problem. previous mouse pad was a picture with different colours/tones. all sorted. yahoo.
I got a laser mouse from acrox or something… that fixed the jumping problem. I think its a defective mouse…

I know it’s a bit late, but…
It’s to do with reflective surfaces. Try using an optical mouse on a piece of glass if you want a good laugh. You would think that the more reflective, the better, but actually, it’s the opposite.
A quick way to test if the problem is because the surface is not mouse-friendy is to just put a piece of plain paper (even white photocopy paper) under the mouse and see if that helps you. I bloody hate optical mice for the skipping reason, but mice with balls (yes, I sad MICE WITH BALLS) are getting harder and harder to find these days, plus there’s the clogging up problem you have to deal with.
Truth be told, I now use an optical mouse, but only cos my wife gave it to me as a present, and it’s a good’un, plus I have a matt surface on my desk so it’s not a problem.
A laser mouse solves all that problem, plus it works on glass surface as well, but not if its totally clear such as a showcase surface, you need something under the glass for it to work.
Don’t laser mice cost about 50 squillion dollars though?
All logitech costs a load of money, the AcronX or whatever costs considerably less… and they’re still pretty good.
