This article shows a rather interesting take on the cultural meaning of the smile. And it makes a lot of sense.
Apparently research has shown that smiling is in some cases a sign of social submissiveness.Interesting vicious cycle, where a kindly smile can be taken as a sign of submission, which makes the person viewing the smiler think less of him, which may cause more smiling to get into good graces. Intelligently designed, my ass. I’m not sure the emotion being conveyed by lower status smiles is embarrassment so much as obsequiousness, but I’m not going to nitpick.
Here, however, it makes sense. In a different way. As I have noticed it is usually while someone is being a complete ass and acting in a classless, rude, stupid manner that they show the largest smile.

I mean, it’s happened to even a totally hot person like me, I smile at pretty girl and she doesn’t automatically smile back at me…I don’t know what’s her problem. Every attractive girl should smile when I smile at them. What am I, some sort of ordinary guy, a non-Brad Pitt?!
