Smuggling prostitutes from the mainland

Hi all,

I’m working on a novel set in Taipei and am wondering if anyone has any stories or has seen anything on the news about the details of smuggling mainland prostitutes into Taiwan. I remember seeing stuff on the news about this when I lived in Taipei a few years ago, but I’m now back in the US, and can only find statistics, etc. online or in newspapers about the topic. One of the characters in the book is involved with a ring of petty gangsters who own a KTV, and I need a bit more information to make the story at least seem plausible.

I guess what I’m looking for is practical and specific information, like how smugglers get the prostitutes onto the island (air or sea? I remember something about boats coming into Jilong at night); where they go from there; what the benefit is to the people who use the mainland prostitutes (is it just a matter of not being regulated if they use mainland women instead of Taiwanese women?). Anyway, any info would be much appreciated, or if you can direct me to a website or an article that has more details, that would also be great.

Thanks!

Xiaolin

PS and if you don’t know factually how all the smuggling is done, how would YOU do it? Just kidding! But if you have an idea, I’d love to hear it…

Here is how I would bring prostitutes into Taiwan.

1.) Catapult

2.) Wand of Invisibility

3.) Bribe Scotty with a cheap bottle of whiskey and a pack of smokes for a half an hour use of the transporter room.

I know that there are quite frequent attempts by illegal immigrants to enter Taiwan via Kinmen or Matsu using boats though I am not sure if some of the females are prostitutes nor do I know how they would get from there to Taiwan. I assume they would try to take the regular ferries to Kaoshiung or Keelung respectively since there are passport/ID controls at the airport on each island.

Er, well, each of the guys who run the KTV marries a hooker and has her shipped over legally…
Then there are the ones who come over in a fishing boat and avoid being drowned at sea when the coast guard shows up.
