Somebody slept during the history session regarding Christianity in Europe The Kings changed to Christianity due to the Church tax, the Kings could make more money… Nothing about faith
Christianity was both a tool of state power and a source of moral/ideological resources that later movements (like abolition, democracy, human rights) drew from.
It’s not just “follow the money,” but it’s also not some pure line of “faith produced freedom.”
Why other religions didn’t democratize as easily:
•Islam: Political and religious authority fused; no institutional “church vs state” to create power-sharing.
•Confucianism: Hierarchical, order-first; little tradition of popular sovereignty.
•Buddhism: Often withdrawn from politics; monks weren’t building parliaments.
•Hinduism: Strong caste structures slowed egalitarian movements until modern times.
There are many factors but it’s clear Christianity has a lot of influence on democratic movements.
If it was just about tax, those nations wouldn’t have gone on to abolish slavery, enshrine human rights, build universities, and establish democratic systems, all under a Christian worldview. The economic motive may have been part of it, but the cultural and moral framework of Christianity shaped Europe into something far greater than greedy kings could ever plan.
I don’t think you’re able to have a serious discussion.
Historically, Christianity has influenced many democratic movements around the world. When I pointed it out for HK, all you can do is laugh.
You don’t need to believe in Christianity to discuss how Christianity help shaped democracy.
No one is claiming people didn’t abuse religion for personal gains and Christians were all saints that did no wrong.
These 2 things above are not mutually exclusive.
We are pointing out that Christianity has influenced democratic societies. Even in school we would learn about different religious movements that shaped society in a secular way.
