Something is up with friends.forumosa.com

I’m trying to buy a VIP membership but once I go to the PayPal page very worrying things happen

First it asks me for a creditcard number. I’ve got enough cash in my PayPal account to be able to pay for stuff so that shouldn’t happen. Last time it didn’t.

Secondly the icon at the top of the taskbar in Opera that tells me if the site certificate is ok does not go green. I.e. it’s not clear if the “PayPal” page I’ve been directed to is actually part of PayPal.com because Opera can’t verify the trust chain on the certificate.

This scares me - it looks like some sort of Man In The Middle hackery. I’m going back to the real PayPal.com to change my password.

Actually I checked with PayPal and they said

“Unfortunately in order to purchase a membership or set up a subscription payment on your PayPal account, you must have a credit or debit card added to your account as a back up funding source.”

Now I’ve got a disposable PayPal account with a small balance for buying stuff on the internet which by definition doesn’t have any backup. But a year or so ago it was a membership, not a subscription and this account worked then.

Still if you look at the forumosa friends site and it does say subscription. And it says
Please note:
At the end of the subscription period, your subscription will be automatically renewed, saving you time and money. You can cancel at any time.
In the FAQ it says

Umm, thanks but no thanks. My experience of auto renewal is that when you email people to cancel sometimes they get it right. Othertimes they don’t and you end up having to fiddle around getting the cash back from PayPal or Visa. Or they delete your account completely.

Is there any chance you can make the old behaviour - I.e. pay for membership, get membership with no autorenewal a possibility?
