Sommelier

Went there a week or so ago, an excellent selection of reasonably priced wines, and great Tapas.

It’s actually a big wine shop with a bar, so you wander around, select what you want, and Michael serves it for you at the bar. There is also a seating area.

It’s beneath the entrance to Tian Mu Wellcome. As you go up Chung Shan and reach Tian Mu E/W Road there is a kind of roundabout thing. Wellcome is basically on the NW corner of that, and there are steps leading up to it. Sommelier is underneath the steps.

The address is 1F, 3 Tien-Mu West Road, tel. 2872 3531.

They also do home delivery if you buy 12 bottles. You can mix the case. I throughly recommend this place, and Michael’s recommendations are spot on, and he doesn’t simply recommend the most expensive stuff. Chances are if you pick a bottle you like he’ll be able to recommend one just as good but cheaper. He did that for us with a Pouilly-Fousee (or however the hell you spell it!) and a Rioja. In fact we tested him on the Rioja (by drinking both bottles!) and he was spot on. The one he recommends is much better than the Faustino VII and I think it was a bit cheaper !

There are also Belgian beers in there.

Cool, I was there too. I browsed but was totally unfamiliar with his selections. He was also helping out a couple of other customers so I didn’t get a chance to chat with him. I understand the “French” emphasis but gee, there are other parts of the world where the wine is as good if not better than French wines. He could do better with his selections.

Just got another case of stuff from them… good guys and very service oriented.

I have been there plenty of times for the Belgian beer, pretty good selection. And you are right about the service, Michael helped my wife pick out a couple bottles of wine and we loved both.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of French wines anymore - there’s so much rubbish to go through before you find a good’un.

I’d trust Michael’s advice though, and I suppose given that he knows about French wines it’s natural he’d have a wide selection. I’d also trust him not to quibble if you got a dodgy one and brought it back to him (undrunk, of course!).

He’s got a good selection of New World wines as well though…

What am I doing at home at half nine on a Friday ? Time to go and do some research…

Hear, hear, Hexuan!

'Tis a horrible trek to Sommelier from downtown, so buying by the case is a great idea, but if you can be bothered, it’sh an intereshting alternative to the regular bar scene, of an evening.

Selection of (non-French) wine is good and improving…and Michael’s recommendations are always good. Cheers!
