Songs About Your Hometown

2nd song is by The Muttonbirds. Looks like you already knew the first was by the Front Lawn. I forget if Front Lawn just cahnged the name to Muttonbirds, or if there was a change in membership, but Don McGlashen (if I got the name right) was in both, and I saw both live.

I like the first song best, and can’t really remember how the second one goes, but these lines say a lot to me (miss home when I read them):
I wish I was in Wellington, the cafes and the bars.
The music and the theatre, and the old Cable Car,
And you can walk everywhere, 'cause nowhere’s very far,
Song about my hometown: We Got to Get Out of This Place by the Animals.

Seriously though, there’s Susie Cincinnati by the Beach Boys, The Cincinnati Kid by Ray Charles, South of Cincinnati by Dwight Yoakam, and Cincinnati by the Distillers, the mention in Jimmy Buffett’s Fins (Cincy’s famous for its “parrotheads”)…
She came down from Cincinnati
It took her three days on the train
Lookin’ for some peace and quiet
Hoped to see the sun again

But now she lives down by the ocean
She’s takin’ care to look for sharks
They hang out in the local bars
And they feed right after dark

Can’t you feel ‘em circlin’, honey
Can’t you feel ‘em swimmin’ around
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you’re the only bait in town
Oh oh
Oh oh
You got fins to the left, fins to the right
And you’re the only girl in town
And of course, the theme song from WKRP in Cincinnati…
Baby, if you’ve ever wondered,
Wondered whatever became of me,
I’m living on the air in Cincinnati,
Cincinnati, WKRP.

Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,
Town to town and up and down the dial
Maybe you and me were never meant to be,
But baby think of me once in awhile.

I’m at WKRP in Cincinnati…
Does one line about my hometown count?
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin’ for the trains. . . [But Janis sang it “waitin’ for a train”].
–“Me and Bobby McGee”

And does one line about a town across the river and 20 miles to the west of my hometown count?
Goin’ down to Rosedale, gonna take my rider by my side,
We can barrelhouse, Mama, on the other side.
–“Walkin’ Blues” (and the words somehow made their way into Cream’s version of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads”)

Richardm… Wierd Al has a classic… called Albuquerque:
The long is about 10 minutes long or so… so I won’t post the lyrics, but you can read 'em HERE

Here’s my town… Counting Crows - Omaha:
Omaha Somewhere in middle America
Get right to the heart of matters
It’s the heart that matters more
SQJ

the guess who, running back to saskatoon.
the tragically hip, paris on the praries.
those are the only two i can think of, but i dont listen to alot of music.

Thanks for reppin’ the Queen City. Cincy was the closest ‘big city’ to me as a youth. No songs about Oxford that I know of.
I think there may be some German polka type tunes about ‘Zinzannatti’ but I’m not sure.
Also, did you know that James Brown recorded most of his early and middle songs at a studio just off 1-75 south of GE? (It actually sets right next to 75) Yep…somewhere in my head I know the name of the place, just can’t think of it this morning.

Tigerman -

You missed the best one…
Artist/Band: Dudley Dave
Lyrics for Song: Six Days on the Road
Lyrics for Album: Trucker Classics

Well, I pulled out of Pittsburgh,
Rollin’ down the Eastern Seaboard.
I’ve got my diesel wound up,
And she’s running like never before.
There’s a speed zone ahead, all right,
I don’t see a cop in sight.
Six days on the road and I’m gonna make it home tonight
Rush - YYZ

Who was looking for Albuquerque?
I remember a song that went “Hot dog, jumping frog, Albuquerque…”
Damn, now I’ve got that thing in my head.

Prefab Sprout- ‘The King of Rock’n’Roll’, I think.

And for all you Geordies there’s the classic ‘Fog on the Tyne’. I prefer the superior Gazza dance remix myself.

I love how they add the “State street what a great street” line, a la Old Blue Eyes.

When I think about those nights in Montreal
I get the sweetest thoughts of you and me
Memories of love above the city lights
Ooh, I tried so hard to take it
But oh Lord my heart won’t make it

Anyone guess the artist on this one? I’m ashamed to mention it!

Never knew that. I used to go by there on my way to Cincinnati. You were just down the road from me in Middletown, which aside from Cris Carter and Clarence Page, is not known for a whole lot.

Citizen K

Gino Vannelli, as anyone who’s ever listened to ICRT knows.

The Animals - We’ve gotta get out of this place

This song is about my home town - Newcastle, England

Kind of explains why i came here…
