Source for political debates/discussions: Vidal to Hitchens

Hi friends,

In my ongoing search for mp3-format debates and political discussions, I stumbled upon this site this evening: http://www.uncommonknowledge.org

Although it is a Hoover/Stanford program (and it is therefore not surprising that there appear to be more conservative guests than liberal ones) the guest list includes a number of prominent contibutors from the left as well. I noticed that Gore Vidal and Robert Reich have both contibuted, for example.

Sadly (from my point of view) they seem to have only recently switched to the mp3 format, so many of their archive pieces are only available via Real Player or as text. Nevertheless – it looks like an interesting source for people interested in political discussions.

The two I listened to today were (1) a debate about animal rights featuring an old favorite of mine, Richard Epstein, and (2) a discussion of “the New Left” with Anne Applebaum and Christopher Hitchens.

I thought that perhaps some of our die-hard “Hitch” fans, like porcelainprincess and Richardm, might enjoy this one in particular. Incidentally this was actually the first time I’d actually listened to Hitchens, as opposed to just reading him, and I was very surprised to discover that he sounds a lot like one our long-time contributers here in the IP forum. I’m talking about the voice here, not necessarily the accent, and certainly not the tone. His tone actually reminds me of Noam Chomsky – the same calm, confident (arrogant, would say the critics) “I am clearly far more intelligent than you, so I really can’t be bothered to get myself too worked up about this topic, you understand…” manner.

Anyway, happy listening for anyone who enjoys this sort of thing!
