South Africa Cheap and Safe

How long would you be able to stand traveling with your parents and your 6 year old nephew in a foreign country?

 • a. 5 days
 • b. 10 days
 • c. 15 days
 • d. I’d save the money and go traveling in South Africa on my own

Hi, I’m planning a family trip with my parents (ages 60+, not big travelers) and my sister’s family (with a kid aged 6) to Sun City and Cape Town in South Africa. The dilemma is that I’d like to find hotels, tours and transportation methods that are suitable for a family but also inexpensive.

Can anyone recommend any websites for affordable accommodations, tours etc…?

Is anyone familiar with the Johannesburg airport and how easy it is to get an affordable shuttle out to Sun City on the same day of arrival? I’ve checked some shuttle options and they seem to go over $100USD!

I also realize that Sun City happens to be a ritzy resort town, but does anyone know of any affordable places to stay there?

Thanks for your help!

I voted D.

Sun City is a bit of a Vegas knock-off. I have never been, yet I am quite sure it’s not a town, but a resort in the bushveld. There are just levels of accommodation within the complex.

Besides amusement parks (including a “beach” with man-made waves), gambling, and golf, it also right next door to a wildlife park.

So, it’s definitely a family thing with lots to entertain.

Here’s the blurb from their site: suninternational.com/resorts/suncity/

Sun City Resort has a unique heartbeat and an African rhythm of its own and is unlike any other Resort destination in the world. This is pure fantasy and your every desire is met. There are four world-class hotels including the magnificent Palace of the Lost City that glitters like a jewel beneath the African sun, brilliant in its rain forest surroundings and luxurious in its detail and design.

Adjoining the Resort, is the beautiful Pilanesberg National Park, which will delight game viewers as it is a malaria free zone and home to the Big 5.

It’s not going to cheap but it’s going to be safe, safe also in that it’s a good bet the 6-year-old to the grand parents will have something fun to do.

I would also strongly suggest taking that shuttle, if you do go. It is not too expensive as SC is about 200km from Jhb. Do not go looking for something cheaper outside of the Airport.

In Cape Town: I would suggest these 3 hotels:

The City Lodge (a chain of mid-priced business hotels but good value, as they have cut the frills ie no restaurants, room service etc, with excellent service and rooms). There is one just outside the V&A Waterfront, with easy access to it, Table Mountain, the Airport and the city.

Or the Breakwater Lodge (within the waterfront-an old prison!).
bwl.co.za/rates.asp

(I think the BWL is a great deal.)

Or the Holiday Inn Eastern Boulevard travel-library.com/hotels/af … evard.html

In Cape Town:

I would suggest not renting car, but taking day tours in a private 8-9 seater. You’ll have a driver, less stress, and he’ll know where he’s going. You’ll also have no need for a car if you stay in or near the Waterfront waterfront.co.za/. You’ll be close to loads of restaurants, live entertainment, tour operators etc. I know it sounds touristy and it is, BUT it is quite safe and a good place to have some fish & chips on a sunny afternoon, for shopping, or to embark on a sunset cruise of Table Bay .

Day tours worth taking:
Cape Point - a whole day drive around the Cape Peninsula with Cape Point (where the oceans meet) as the highlight. You’ll get to see most of Cape Town and even some penguins, some tours include the Cable Car to the top of Table Mountain (a must do!) in the morning.
City Tour - places of interest in the City - some with brunch at Kirstenbosch Gardens or a stroll aound Green Market Square
Robben Island-boat trip to where Nelson Mandela spent 2/3 of his 28 years in jail!

SA is not as “cheap” as it once was. But those hotels are still “only” around 50 quid a night. There are cheaper places to stay, but the ones I recommended have the resources to keep a safe hotel. There are hundreds of B&Bs without that, besides these hotels have pools (for the young one) and other amenities.

Hi Alleycat,

Thanks so much for the detailed info.
I don’t mind touristy because I AM going to be with my family. Better to be safe and take it easy.

Would any shuttle from the airport in Jo’burg do? Are there certain ones to stay away from or that you recommend?

Thanks!!

Here’s some good info on Sun City; rates are shown. You can see that all the places to stay in the area belong to Sun International even the Game parks.

You can arrange a shuttle through the resort (best).

Have fun,
