Southwest Airline engine explosion

That poor woman who died due to the incident got sucked halfway out the window.

As a fairly frequent flier, that is pretty scary. What would cause the engine to explode like that 32,000 ft off the ground?

My guess is it’s some kind of engine maintenance mistake. Still, this is so rare. Usually engine just catches fire, or stall, not have one of its fan blade shoot out like a cannon.

Probably a bird strike.

Fan blade broke off. They are saying that an initial inspection after it landed showed there was structural fatigue where the blade was held in place.

The blade most likely broke off, tore up the engine, shrapnel smacked the window, the window broke, depressurization sucked the woman out of the window. She either died of a heart attack, asphyxiation, blunt force trauma or a combination of all 3.

From a pilot friend: please do have a look at the emergency procedures, the talk at the beginning of your flight is important, especially regarding the placement of masks when there is depressurization of the cabin. I know people are nervous and everything but your life could depend on those details.

Not that it matters much if you are halfway sucked out, but if you are not, you can still give a fight to survive.
