SPACED REPETITION AUDIO CLIPS (not flashcards)

Spaced audio repetition is an excellent way to learn language in my opinion… esp since I hate sitting in front of a screen flipping flashcards.

Similar to Pimsleur’s, I’m looking to create my spaced rep audio tracks. I’ve got tons of good recordings of Chinese sentences but no software that can help insert them in an appropriate time interval… such as the Pimsleur series did.

I’ve been using this one but it’s options are pretty limited.

Gradint seems a little rubbish to me.

Any geniuses out there? I’ll make it all freely available once done.

Pleco’s flashcard program (Android and iOS) works with audio, but as far as I’m aware you have to use their audio files (on the plus side, it is pretty good audio, especially with the premium version). You could configure it to give you spaced repetition audio-only flashcards, followed by a reveal with the English/characters/pinyin/whatever, and a grading button for you to record how you did on that card.

Thanks, I’m assuming it’s premium comes at a premium. I’ll go check it out. I suspect I still can’t do this while driving to work, out on a bike, in the gym, yada yada. Huge bummer for me.

Here’s an idea what I’m trying to achieve in the audio

  1. English sentence (make me guess the chinese translation)
  2. Silence
  3. Chinese sentence a few times (+space for me to repeat)

This means I can have a permanent Chinese quiz running with spatial repetition whenever I choose, at my whim.

Here is my excel sheet. I’ve got thousands of perfect sentences in writing, pinyin, with native Chinese spoken audio clips. All of this is sorted and just waiting for some software.

There are such decks on Anki. You just need to browse their shared decks for Chinese to find them. It think one deck has all of the Tatoeba passages that have audio.

Thanks! I got the original audio from ANKI.

I’m looking for the software to manipulate the order of the clips.

You’ll need to learn how to use database or spreadsheet software for that one. It took me a long time to figure out how to create a useful algorithm for ordering cards for reading. I imagine that doing the same for audio will either require accompanying text and an ordering algorithm, or some other factors.

Perhaps yes.

The algorithm is one part I can work on. Software that kind blend mp3 files together would be tricky. I’ll stick to my primitive non spaced repetition for now.

Surprised I can’t find much around the language communities on the web for such a crucial area of self study.

You just need the hyperlinks to the audio files to correspond to the text of the card. That’s not so difficult.

I don’t know what exact area you’re trying to research…

I need to make MP3’s

ALS tapes already exist.

In case anyone else ends up looking, what you probably want is Gradint

Did you ever complete your audio sentence project?

It would be great to hear about your progress.

Sure did - let me know if you want some free samples

Hi, I’m wondering if you’ve finished your audio-spaced-repetition project? Could you post a link.
