Speeding ticket?

On my way to 2 job interviews today, I think I may have sped past 2 speed cameras.

How much is the going rate for a speeding ticket?

Also, does anybody know how much over you have to be for the camera to snap your evil speeding deeds?

TP

You have not mentioned on a scooter or in a car.

If scooter then i think it has now rtisen to 900 NT, if a car and in town ie not on the freeways, then it is 1800NT if the freeway then 3000NT minimum.

Most are normnally set to run anything over 10kmh over the limit.

Thanks!
I was driving my car.

At night, I’ve seen people go really fast past speed cameras (in cars and on scooters), but there was never a flash. Other times there has been a visible flash. Does this mean that some speed cameras are only operating some of the time?

AFAIK, it depends on how sloppy the cops are being with regard to replacing the film. I think that if the camera has run out of film, the flash won’t work.

Yeah, as in most countries not all of the cameras are active all of the time, you takes your chance. Even if it flashes then there is a slim chance of not getting a ticket, if the film is used up, though the newest cameras not yet in Taiwan auto send the digital pictures back to a base so no need for film.

The threat of a camera is the biggest deterent; notice all the yellow signs warning of a speed camera zone, but no camera anywhere in sight! :unamused:

Not all of the cameras have flash guns, so some work only during daylight hours, and some are like 7-11… The cameras on the freeway never have flash as they found it causes accidents when people slam on the brakes after the flash went off. :unamused:
Some of the boxes are empty some of the time as they have more boxes than cameras, so they rotate them around. They are buying more since it’s such good business, so don’t expect to get lucky very often.
FWIW, at speeds over about 240kmh the cameras cannot produce a clear enough image to ID your tags, flash or no flash

SO all I have to do is increase my speed by another 10 clicks and I’ll be alright…

Damn! My Speedo only goes up to 220km/h! :unamused:

I flash back, when they see the pictures they are too impressed to give me a ticket.

This 240kmh speed limit does not apply to the newer cameras, though it does to the older ones. Not sure how many if any of the new cameras TW has.

Got done last year down near KaoHsung at 233kmh, even then they only just had enough of a picture to read the plate number.
Another 1 or 2 kmh and i might have got away with it.

How much did that set you back, Traveller?

Curious,

ck, luckily it was before the recent change to the fines system, otherwise it would be probably expensive.

Mine was the standard 3000NT fine, much to my surprise, was expecting more, but no not the case. Was quite happy with the outcome, did not even try to ban me which i was also told to expect.

Was not going to question why the punishment was less than it could have been. Just paid it very quickly

Conventional wisdom is that you have a 10 kph leeway. I’ve gotten tickets for going 61 kph in a 50 kph zone and 111 kph on the highway.

Ahh! The good old days!

CK

Indeed, my understanding of the new system, is that it would have cost something like 15000NT, but am not certain.

What i did like was that if it came to a ban, because it was on a camera, i could hand in my wifes licence, she very rarely ever drives, for the ban period, seems a little silly but there we go.

Just out of curiousity, what were you driving and where? Also what time of day?

Maoman, on the highway, at about 1:30 in the morning, with the freeway empty. As for what then a Volvo T5, more than capable of that speed and a bit more :sunglasses:

After I installed my radar detector, I was amazed to find out how many of the cameras are inactive. Even so, they’ve achieved their purpose - getting people to slow down. Most people don’t know that they are inactive, or even if they do, don’t risk it, and will slow down. They seem to turn them on at random times. Sometimes, one that has been dormant for weeks, will suddenly be on for a few days, then go dormant again. There are some that have always been active though.

On the freeway, the fixed cameras aren’t used that much anymore. Most of the active cameras on the freeway now are the mobile units, so you don’t know where they are unless you have a good radar detector or you get a ticket.

Another thing to note, is that if the camera is near an intersection, and a radar detector doesn’t pick it up, it is probably a red light cam, and is most likely active.

[/quote]Those are bastards, and they are very good at camouflaging them. This stealth approach tells you they are more interested in revenue than deterrence/safety. Note that they have to deploy them and collect them, so they have to have a safe area to do so. Thus you never find them on overpasses, bridges or in tunnels.

Some of the cameras at intersections do double duty, but the vast majority of them only snap the redlight runners.
