Startup Labs Taiwan, a new disruptive incubation program - global in scale – begins Feb 10th and is a 22 day program where 5 teams receive $1,000,000 NTD to build their startup. Teams will receive mentorship as well as technical help to build their product. Confirmed Mentors will attend the event from Taiwan, China, Middle East, Silicon Valley, Eastern Europe, Austria and Germany. This program is best suited to startups building web applications and mobile apps. Startups will be judged based on the progress they make during the 22 days and the speed at which they develop product. Teams are expected to validate their products with customers during the program. If a team was building a Groupon clone, success would look like:
A working platform to host deals
Partnerships with merchants that are offering deals
A plan to grow their email subscriber base
22 days are not enough time to build a business but it is enough time to prove to the mentors and investors that the team is capable of executing on their vision. Please see the rules section to learn more about the application process.
They are looking for very particular type of companies (web / mobile apps, at a fairly early stage). So if you already have revenue and you feel your company is worth much more, then you probably wouldn’t apply, unless you’re willing to give up that 8% stake.
Apparently over 100 companies have applied so far, including mine.
But are there startup workspaces like in the US here in Taipei?
Instead of renting out whole office spaces, in places like Silicon Valley, there are growing number of workspaces (much like a cafe setting but also have meeting rooms for rent on hourly basis, business mailbox, phone answering service, etc.) targeting startup businesses.
A lot of these workspaces will host entreprenuer or tech meetups in the evenings as a promotion for their services.
I don’t think I’ve seen any such places in Taipei with the closest being say, Starbucks.
Anyone else know of work places, co-operative office spaces, or workspaces like what I have described?

There was a company that used to do something like that but I’m not sure if they are still in business. The hardest part is you need a business(legal that is) registered to an address that it actually does business at. There are no off the shelf corporations here afaik.

You have to apply to get in. If you’re one of the selected teams (they look for teams in the local mobile space), you get mentorship and space to work out of for six months, after which you do a demo in front of investors. At that point, you may get funding to continue.
