šŸ¤¼ Sumo

Sumo wrestlers face off with babies in their arms and the first baby to cry wins. Why? Because baby crying scares off evil spirits.

Next tournament 12 to 26 May in Tokyo.

May banzuke should be released by early next week, perhaps even tomorrow (May 2023 banzuke was released on 30-Apr-2023).

Just in time, too. The Masterā€™s is done, NBA and MLB are both a hard pass (for me), NHL is on cable (that cord was cut years ago), EPL is winding down so matches are getting rare as pin feathers on my Peacock app (in the US we have to sign up for the pricier NBCSports app to watch remaining Arsenal, Man City, and Liverpool matches).

Saturday and Sunday afternoons have become sports-content deserts and Iā€™m dying of thirst.

DAZN app local seems cheap for sports.

Superbowl was NT$30.

Price is right (USD$20/month) but the cubbard is bare. A LeBron program (?), Spanish and Italian football matches (one each) on Wednesday, and the live press conference for a Canelo fight on Thursday. Not exactly compelling.

Itā€™s just one of those brief, barren times for (my) sports, unfortunately. :man_shrugging:

Come on sumo.

Onosato is the best thing in Sumo right now, young, strong and tall, positive attitude. Most of his fights over the past two tournaments looked effortless and he won against the yokozuna and several ozeki. If not stopped by injuries and drinking with underaged stable mates he could well be the next yokozuna.

July Sumo Tournament Dolphins Arena Aichi starts tomorrow

Shin sekiwake Onosato is what, part cat? No way a guy who weighs 180+ can move like that unless he has cat genes. I reckon heā€™s the odds-on favorite to win, i.e., to repeat.

Last time for Grand Sumo at Aichi Prefectural gymnasium, which has been in use since 1965(?). New house will be close by, though.

I believe it was the first gymnasium with air-conditioning to host Grand Sumo in Japan. Even so, over on NHK there are pictures of large fans blowing over huge blocks of ice onto fans in the nose-bleed seats.

I wonder if this will be Terunofujiā€™s last tournament. Will also be interesting to see if Takakeisho can finish, and what the heck is up with Kirishima?

He has been really good the last tournaments. Looks very strong and confident.

Terunofuji is feeling confident his lead well at 9-0

I kind of suspect that the other wrestlers let him win this time to then send him into retirement with 10 wins under his belt. Or they just suck. There seems to be a curse on wrestlers making it to the ozeki rank. So many have made it once, just to be demoted soon after never to make it back. Kirishima looks nothing like before, Hoshoryu is not convincing, nor is Takakeisho. Kotozakura looks solid though. I expect Watatakakage to be back in sanyaku soon, surpassing his disappointing brother.

First defeat this tournament

Well dang.

Hey Iā€™m 14 hours behind Japan. I watch on NHK, and they donā€™t post highlights to their app until their techs arrive at the office next morning, so Iā€™m actually closer to 24 hours behind. I wonā€™t be able to watch the day 15 highlights until mid-morning Monday your time, at the soonest.

Blur if you have spoilers to share, please!

Sorrryyyyyy, my comment was 6 hours+ after the match

I donā€™t watch it live and usually only see the TV news highlights the next day at noon although yesterday I watched the midnight highlights.

OK, I can go with no spoilers before noon the following day

@tango42 and others, go ahead and fire away. I have an unreal number of irons in the fire right now, meaning Iā€™m only up through day 8 (and I only got that far late last night  ).

In my opinion having to worry about spoilers - when a single laggard like me is so far behind - can itself spoil the fun. I will just bow out of this thread until Monday. No worries! :bowing:

I am impressed by Terunofuji. When heā€™s healthy he looks like a strongest out there. He bear hugs an opponent and its over. He should win it now, donā€™t see him lose two bouts in the last three days.

I canā€™t be bothered to try and find nattosumo anymore. He always gets banned and shows up somewhere else later. Now I just watch selected highlights without commentary on this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos.
