Barrio Fiesta is OK as is Christines which is located behind St Christophers Church at the top of the street and in a large cellar…I heard that Romeo’s has reopened on Linsen North Road which was OK before.( Near Malibu West) Again in a cellar.
If you are new to the area I suggest The Farmhouse and the pub opposite.
I was in the neighborhood today, and googled where I might be able to get a beer and some pub food for lunch, and a break from the nearly 37 degree heat. When I got there, I kind of chickened out, since it was abluster with middle aged Filipinos dressed to the 9s and more of a dinghy, dark, vibe --that is to say, felt more like a second Saturday Night–than a good place to quietly eat my lunch.
I have to say, I’m intrigued by the neighborhood and I’d like to go back sometime, but it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting from a Sunday afternoon.
Dressed to the 9s, because Sunday is the only day off, for most of them, to have fun, etc.
Perhaps another day of the week and the place will be rather mellow.
I don’t mind a Saturday on a Sunday afternoon sometimes but not sure about the “middle aged Filipinos” part.
Malibu West a good western style place to hang out daytime or nighttime in the area with good food and drinks. Patina next door I hear has better food but less vibe.
That is what I learned yeah. Not really a problem, I was just thrown by all the English named bars and taverns. I was not surprised that it used to be a famous expat part of Taipei, though that vibe seems to have entirely drifted to more of a Little Manilla.
The way I’ve heard about the “Combat Zone” area is it was
At one time, it was a bar area that Taiwanese and US military visited as a rest and relaxation play area during Vietnam and Korean wars.
Then, up until around the year 2000? it became “the” area in Taipei for all kinds of people to go out at night with restaurants and pubs and other fun.
Finally until now, it went downhill to nothing starting after around 2000 due to other places opening and due to government influence.
It’s too bad that this area or some area can’t be encouraged to be a entertainment area like all other major cities or countries in Asia have. Taipei has no pedestrian area for adults to go out at night and stroll around and hop from restaurant to pub to dancing… In Taipei, it’s all a taxi to the next spot.
