Supplemental Health Insurance

In the Central Taiwan area. I have NHI already, but I want more insurance, and I’ve heard tons of stories about people but don’t know anyone who sells it. Any contact info would be appreciated!

Not sure if the OP is trolling, but I’ll bite.

Just walk into any bank and say you want to buy insurance. You’ll be swarmed with sharks trying to sell you everything under the sun within seconds.

I’ve got supplemental insurance through nan shan it costs me just under 30k a year. Not too bad. My agent only speaks Chinese. If you’d like her number let me know.

Amasashi, really? I will give that a try. Usually when I go in my bank everyone gets real nervous, so I just keep quiet and do my business, but I suppose I could get conversational and bring up insurance.

Why did you think I was trolling?

iamtheceo - can I ask what that covers? Is it just for you, or your family?

I have supplemental insurance but only cos the ball’n’chain insisted on it. I can’t even remember what it covers me for - IIRC, it pays a bit for daily hospital expenses and up to ~NT$1m for treatments that NHI won’t cover. Pretty basic, but that costs me $1800/mo.

Most of the plans I’ve looked at offer even worse value for money - many of them seem little better than pyramid schemes. You’d be better off just putting an emergency stash in the bank.

Hmmm, does it cover work/wage loss?

Some of this supplemental stuff is pricey. What I’d like is something that allows me to get sick or hurt in any major way without having any out of pocket or hassle. I don’t really need work/wage loss, although some life insurance would be nice.

Do you have a contact?

Mine covers pretty much everything. Work/wage loss, hospital stays, better meds, if you break a bone or anything happens they supposedly pay you a certain amount.

Okay, thanks guys. I’ll try my bank, as well as nanshan.

Did you run into any ID No. problems? They get frazzled when you say you don’t have a Taiwan ID (which is . . . funny), and I tell them my ARC ought to do the trick, but if they haven’t done it before, they tend to think it can’t be done.

no, only direct medical expenses.

Some of it is, but the vast majority isn’t. A broken bone is unlikely to cost you more than 5-10K (trust me on that one!).

Unless you have something major like cancer or something, the insurance payout (and the costs) will be modest.

Got to go out now, but I’ll look up my contact later. She speaks limited English.

To the OP:

Sorry, I get bombarded with insurance offers from bank people all the time (at the bank, on the phone, even at work) so I thought it was such an obvious answer. My apologies!

But be careful though. Insurance is pricey in Taiwan and oftentimes just a straight up rip. As a general rule, avoid all forms of permanent insurance and insurance saving plans. The best way to go is to get term insurance with guarantee coverage up to 75 years of age and hopefully a fixed rate independent of medical exams. It’s pretty cheap and the coverage/payout is really nice. PM me if you want to talk more about this
