I have an A.P.R.C. with an open-work permit. I don’t have to do med checks, go to the police station or renew anything at all so long as I reside in Taiwan 183 days out of the year and don’t break any serious laws. Like the day my friend and I got arrested for surfing on a typhoon day!! Talked my way outta that one! Whew!

Only know the surf crowd in Taitung, mostly in Donghe, but in my experience they are generally friendly to foreigners, eager for the cachet of Taiwan being known on the international surfer scene.
