I’ve been somewhat naively swimming in the ocean off Taiwan’s East Coast for almost 30 years, but never really regularly (maybe a few days on average each year). But lately I’m swimming much more often. I’ve learned enough about ordinary undertow and riptide through experience, and am a very relax…

[image] MalcolmReynolds: Warm-up exercises will prevent getting caught in a rip current and dying? Is that actually what happened here? First article doesn’t mention rip current, second is only the oceanographer who brings it up. If it was, how did the little girl escape? Also if it was, a…

So good the girl lived but Taiwan needs swimming pools and mandatory swim lessons in all schools to educate people on how to swim and water safety Man powered Water craft on the ocean especially needs skills and rescue equipment being readily available The ocean is dangerous and being on even an i…

News from a few days ago, the beach is open again. [Keelung beach reopens following drowning incidents | Taiwan News | RTI]

They mention rip currents again. Has that been verified? From the pictures of the beach, I’m thinking that wasn’t a factor. But I’ve never been there so I’m not really sure. Does anyone know if stingrays are a problem here? Growing up around the Gulf of Mexico, we quickly learned to do the stingray shuffle and I still got popped. Simply curious since I take my kids to the beaches often???

Not an ocean incident this time but a lake. SUP paddleboarder in Hsinchi falls into lake and drowns (wasn’t wearing life vest). The 23 year old didn’t know how to swim. [image] Paddleboarder drowns in Hsinchu lake - Focus Taiwan Hsinchu, Aug. 26 (CNA) A 23-year-old man drowned at Emei…

WTH. Another guy not far, also can not swim to help? People filming, don’t want to get wet? 23 y/o guy can’t swim… :face_with_diagonal_mouth: Could have been avoided if anyone had some common sense. Very sad situation. In Germany at my junior high every kid had to pass swimming certificate in spo…
