Swinhoe exhibition in Taichung

Has anyone been to the Swinhoe exhibition at Taichung’s Natural Science Museum?

Robert Swinhoe was a pioneering ESL teacher back in the mid-nineteenth century. When he wasn’t working at his buxiban, he pursued his interest in natural history. Today his name is immortalized in the names (both common and scientific) of many of Taiwan’s animals.

I saw his cock once on the backside of Alishan. It was shiny and beauriful.

God, is it any wonder the Romans built Hadrian’s Wall?

The “cock” is a Mikado Pheasant, not a Swinhoe’s Pheasant. And it’s “on the backside” of Yushan, not Alishan. I guess it’s been a while since you handled a NT$1000 note.

Swinhoe’s pheasant (male, aka cock). As seen by me in a bamboo forest on the backside of Alishan two years ago. Photo’s not mine though – I wasn’t THAT lucky.

Although now that you mention it, maybe it WASN’T Swinhoe’s cock I saw.

Nice pics Sandy. Lovely looking birds. I thought you were jokingly referring to the NT1000 bill.
Just to make things clear for folks, the bottom one is the Mikado Pheasant.

Anyway, for anyone keen to learn a bit more about Robert Swinhoe, have a look at the material on David Oakley’s wonderful website The Takao Club (for my money, the most interesting expat website about Taiwan and by a long chalk).

But the important question is:

How do they taste?

Like chicken! But they are protected species. However, I can rustle up some Tofu-based Pheasant Substitute meat. You’re a leg man, right?

Protected species always taste better. Why do you think they’re protected? That and the fact that they are known to be Viagra with feathers.
