I did three years in the ‘Chungle’ - 2003 to January 2007, went home for a bit, and then onto China (Quanzhou).
I know this town(Quanzhou) aint for me, but have been to Xiamen, which is very vibrant, with lots of development on the go.
Thing is, I could quite easily go back to Taichung, get a reasonably good job (for less hours and better pay), live well, eat well, save, enjoy the nightlife, etc.
I’m wondering though - has anything much changed there since January? I remember seeing some big-ass apartment blocks been built and heard Costco might finally open up.
At the same time, I remember the Tesco was being bought out by Carrefour, there was a bigger clampdown on nightlife, and the foreigners seemed to be getting more and more cliquey.
Those in the know, please tell: was it a good 2006 in Taichung? What happened? What didn’t happen? And what do you forecast for the city in 2007?
Carrefour bought out Tesco and took over their stores, as well as opening a brand new store 2 blocks from a previously existing (and still open) Carrefour.
The new Costco is scheduled to open in 2007 (October, I believe).
I don’t know much about the nightlife. I’m usually in bed by 10:00pm.
New apartments are being built everywhere, but traffic actually seems to be a bit better than last year (or I just got used to it).

Sorry, I think the slide in lawlessness has continued unabated and our useless mayor is even more distracted than usual. Construction is still on the upswing, so more gravel/cement trucks, noise and dust to deal with.
My own perception of the foreigner social scene is colored by the folk I met in the last year. Made it seem a whole let better. Except for that…
