So this Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning I’ll be doon sooth on lovely Highway 9, in the village of Fenglin, pretty much midway between Hualien and Taitung as far as I can tell. ok, I’m in Hualien for the weekend and it’s pouring. supposed to keep pouring all day tomorrow. Is there anything interesting to do/see in Hualien that doesn’t involve being outdoors? My original plan was hiking in Taroko, but that doesn’t sound like fun in the pouring rain (plus the whole falling rocks thing). Everything in all the books, brochures, etc seems to be beaches, parks, scenic areas, etc. There must be something indoors worth doing… oh, and I don’t have a car or a scooter or anythin…

I am looking to get out of the city for a few days…alone! Ideally, I would love to stay at a hotel that has a beach within walking distance (on the beach would be great), my own room (not hostel), anywhere in Taiwan…kending, islands, north coast…I don’t care where. I have a project I need to finish and want to spend half of each day in seclusion working and the other half on the beach. Any suggestions? The cheaper, the better

(pics below) I cycled part of the East Coast this past week. Left Taipei late Monday night on juguang train with my Giant Halfway RS (folding bicycle). I started cycling at around 4:30am and from the Hualian train station and it was actually pretty simple getting to the coastal road (#11). I’ll be in Hualien City tomorrow night with seven other cyclists on our way to Taitung. We need a cheap place to stay in Hualien Thursday night. Where can we crash in central Hualien cheaply and reasonably comfortably? It would be great if there was a place to stash our bikes or at least be able to put them in our rooms. We speak Mandarin etc., so send us somewhere cool and funky if possible. Thanks!.
