Taipei weather sucks…with the incessant rain and dark clouds… or toxic heat and air…
A claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated and/or shut in, in a small space, with nothing to do, for an extended period (as in a simple country vacation cottage during a long rain or snow). Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, forgetfulness, laughter, and excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the (less miserable) rain, snow or dark…
Today is November 19th. It’s currently 20 degrees and not raining in Taipei. The forecast for the coming week shows 18 to 28 degrees with a little rain.
I’m guessing Tango and AJ come from San Diego or England.
Cabin fever? In Taipei? Nah. I love the cold. It sure as hell beats sweating buckets. If I feel too cold, I can put on a sweater or coat. When I’m too hot, I can’t take off my skin.

I think the dull skies can get to folks, especially the weak livered, after a while, doubly so if you’re living in a dingy alleyway that sees little natural sunlight.

That’s absolutely true and nothing to mock. I’ve suffered some pretty bad winter depression in my life and don’t wish that state of enervation and sadness on anyone. My current apartment faces east west and is flooded with natural light all day long as I am on the top floor of the tallest building around. I’ve also got the blessed bike paths to jump onto anytime and breathe fresh air and see lots of greenery.
I recommend people take a weekend down south if they are feeling blue because of the weather. There are some cheap places to stay and you don’t have to go all the way to Kaoushiung. Even Taichung is usually sunnier than Taipei. Even a day trip out to Jiji or somewhere and a ride around the rural lanes and bicycle paths will do wonders.

Absolutely. The south is usually sunny and it’s amazing how predictable and great the change in weather is. When I was in Taipei I often headed down to see my woman; it always seemed to clear up a bit north of Taichung.
Mucha Man, what do you mean by “nothing to mock”? It’s not the “weak livered” comment I made, is it? That was a serious medical word of warning to my fellow drunkards; sunlight, vitamin D, liver damage - all connected. It was not a throwaway line suggesting weakness .
One day back in 95 or 96 North Taiwan had something like 38 days of continious precipitation. I finally took a day off, got in my car and drove south. Just past Sanyi, the sun peaked out from behind a cloud, and I actually pulled over on the freeway shoulder just to bask in the sunlight.

why dont you go to a starbucks? or better yet all those multitude of spas that’s been opening up.
and isnt this better than living in northern europe where it gets so cold you cant go out at all? then you get depressed and starting drinking and become alcoholic and suicidal.

i had a russian roommate in ny and dang did he drink a lot! always drinking but he wasnt an alcoholic. just loved to drink. one time i came home and he was “sipping” cough syrup. then another time i went out with him and his friend and we into this liquor mart and they stocked up a push cart full of booze like they were shopping for food. i would hate to see their livers. europeans drink so much especially russians. isnt the average life span of a russian only 50+ years?
ok i just googled it. life expectancy of russian men in the 1990s was in the 50s. it’s now in the 60s.
I don’t really drink. Maybe six times a year. Life expectancy in my country is higher than Taiwan’s or the US’s. S’all just stereotypes you’re talking.
