The Taipei Flora Expo is coming up in November! Anyone here going to be attending?
I’m certainly curious about it. I’ve actually been helping translate some material for them.
Are visitors allowed to pick the vegetables on show? I was thinking of fixing up a nicely dressed salad… :lick:
But how will we ever be able to get in when surely it will be packed to the rafters with people flying in from abroad for this famous international show? 
I think there are somewhere around 4,000,000 pre-sold tickets already. But they will show up over the months that the expo is on. What I’m looking forward to seeing is the EcoARK, I heard it’s made from recycled plastic bottles. Anyone check out their website?
Yeah it’s very GREEN, it’s made from recycled bottles you see…yes let’s say it again…GREEN.
And I who thought most plastic bottles were made out of clear plastic rather than green plastic…
This is definitely going to really put Taiwan on the international map and NO mistake! I’m seeing a soft-love-kitty-power and a green silicon valley Asian hub for sure! 
Plus, the Muddy Basin Ramblers are playing at it. I’m going to leave cigarette butts in the flowerpots.

Have you any IDEA how much money is being wasted on this thing? How much TRASH will be generated? How many of the city’s green spaces will be torn up and destroyed in order to stage this travesty?
Saving the planet? Its the complete OPPOSITE!

Every country does the same thing. It’s not like America’s any better at this. It all depends on how you want to look at the situation. America developed the LEED Certifications, and I think the EcoARK at the flora Expo has the highest LEED certification. So before you complain about how the Flora Expo is to give the mayer a shot at President, why not complain about Bush and how his invasion in Iraq was to find chemical weapons. LOL do you seriously believe Taiwan is more corrupt than America? Taiwan is just a smaller country, rumors and ideas get around much faster than in the states. DUDE… I just want to see some flowers.

EcoARK is actually built on a parking lot, not a park. Where the park used to be, they are putting gardens of flowers there. After the Expo, they will make it back into a park. America developed LEED certification, Taiwan is just following what we think will make us more international. Just because it’s an international event doesn’t mean that there will be a massive amount of CO2 emissions, it doesn’t mean that there will be more flights. They will just make the tickets more expensive. Maybe Hau wants to push this for a shot at president, Maybe he thinks he can do a better job than Ma. I don’t think Ma has been doing much, only thing I’ve been hearing is Expat.

Semantics, there is nothing environmental about this exhibition, just a veneer with a wall made of plastic bottles. What use is that to anybody? You seem to know a lot about LEED certification but not what is truly environmental. Truly environmental would be using existing structures instead of building a new one. BTW, Hau was formed head of the environmental bureau, ironic isn’t it? Now the park is taken out of use of the local citizens for about 2 years…and I believe some of the structures are permanent. Now why didn’t they just knock down the old stadium beside it nd use that space for the exhibition and then rebuild something after…that would have made SENSE.
It’s nice to see the flowers, but it used up the public resources for political gain. How about making a new park instead of selling off the city property for money.
As for your comment about an international event not resulting in more flights…blatantly not true. Look at Shanghai Expo, record number of flights in and out all summer.
I think there it’s nice to have ANYTHING happen in Taiwan being hugely lacking in festivities and events, but a Taipei flower show is not really an international event.
It’s not that all places have such projects. It’s more about the scale of waste and bad planning for this one, especially when one considers the pros and cons.
Hau is pouring an enormous amount of money – including my taxpayer dollars – into this project. Indeed, it has become the signature project of his tenure as mayor. And yet it will likely have no positive effect whatsoever in the long run (and likely not even in the short run) for making Taipei a greener city, attracting foreign tourists, or helping Taiwan’s or the world’s environment. Calling something “international” won’t make it so. And do we really need to go over the environmental negatives of water- and fertilizer-intensive industries whose products are transported by air?
Meanwhile, however, the city had the opportunity to make a wonderful public green space with the Songshan Tobacco Factory (about three-quarters the size of Da’an Park). But much of the land is being handed over to developers. And then there’s Songshan Airport…
I like flowers. Really, I do. So do most others here. But that’s not the point.
But that is what’s environmental about the building. These plastic bottles are actually a solution for recycling plastic, If you actually look into these plastic bottles, they are called Polli-Bricks. It does say that they do have structural and Insulation properties to them. Because people have a really bad habit of using plastics and there hasn’t been a solution to this problem yet. When you recycle PET, the plastic will be down cycled. This means the plastic will not be food grade plastic. So I guess it could be a solution for a lowest grade of plastic?
It’s nice to do something else with the plastic, nobody has a problem with that. But it’s not neccessarily the best solution for housing. I don’t know enough about it.
My problem is the building of a structure made of plastic bricks (or any structure) on a park is not ‘green’ or very useful.
