Taipei - This City is Dead

less chance of a happy ending in Taipei, and the girls are less often men.

You can’t get much wilder than that. Maybe Aberystwyth might be more the OPs cup of tea.

They are all still there. Barcode/The Den are good spots on Fri/Sat, as is Stream in the ATT for fun building. The place to be lately tho, is the Woo Bar and Bar Wet at poolside on the 10th f. the W Hotel. Alternately, you could check out Chess Club, which is Primo’s VIP/ Lounge option to the club itself. Lots of folks out and about and if someone says differently, they are just at the wrong place on the wrong night.

Thanks citizen k, I always loved Taipei nightlife and if you can venture off the weary foreigner path there’s some cool little nooks to be found. Looking forward to some new discoveries when I get there.

Well, for bars, a lot of the old standards are still going strong: think MOD and Mono Mono, both stll very good any night of the week with the same solid clientelle as always!

If you haven’t partied with zombies, you don’t know what you’re missing. The city of the dead is a perfect place for nightlife.

Braaaiiiins.

Just curious, did any of you live in Taipei in the late 1970s when the US military still had a presence here? I understand nightlife back then was just raging. Must have been quite an experience.

It has it’s moments. Many decent places don’t consider the average salary and price themselves out of drawing in crowds. Many expats meet in apartments to save money.
But the original poster is correct if I was younger I couldn’t live here it’s just too boring.
Take a look at the subjects on this forum. Posts about overpriced pizza joints! Burgers!
The craic was good at pizza hut? I think NOT.

Has anyone pointed out that business in general is bad, not only worse than 15 or 20 years ago, but really bad? This influences of course all the simple nightspots we used to enjoy. “Simple” I mean where you get a fresh, ice-cold draft for under 150 NT any time of the day.
The biggest shame of course is good old Roxy, the one that turned into a parking lot, the one just opposite of 45.
BTW, 45 used to be twice the size also. The beer there used to be good and the cocktails even better. Now? Well…
99 is another disappointment, unless one likes night clubs. But it used to be a good hangout, without cover charge, great music and a really friendly DJ.
And now Junior! Last night I walked down there, think no evil do no evil, and saw Jr. Café was closed. A big banner announcing that the tenants on top of Junior where disturbed by the noise. To my memory, Junior never was a very noisy spot. And the apartments on floors 2, 3 and 4 looked as dark and empty as Junior itself. So who’s complaining?
Two things made me angry: (1) Why close down such a friendly neighborhood bar that caused no trouble to anyone? (2) Why was it not announced on the Roxy website? Would that have been too much? Instead of proudly announcing its 18 year old history? :loco:
I’m no raver, I’m not looking for girls, I don’t need a huge menu of exotic foods and 50 kinds of Belgian beer, nothing upscale. Just what a pub originally is and offers. I guess I have to get out and look for some new grounds…

Norbert

Norbert, yes I agree with all your observations. Things have completely changed over the last 10 years or so.
As for Roxy, there is a background story to this, read this thread.

Does this reflect the wide economy as a whole? Property prices in Taipei are a lot higher than 15-20 years ago but it seems most other things are just not good at all. Like stagnant wages for one. One can argue Taiwan peaked in the 1980s/early 1990s and its been a downward slide since then.

Yes in many areas earning power peaked in the 90s. Relocation of factories and importation of labour being the main cause along with failure to grow new industries.

The property price boom is due to record low interest rates and money laundering all encouraged by government policy such as 10% gift tax and property taxes not based on real prices.

Maybe you should stop hanging out at expat places.

I personally avoid them all like the plague. As a creative based in Taipei, there are plenty of hidden nooks, crannies and events… not to mention interesting people to party with all night if need be.

As for partying in Tokyo, I can tell you there are lame expat ridden clubs/bars, and there are places where locals hang… if you have the right people.

Expat ridden… I imagine rats with flags on their little backpacks scurrying about with drinks in their paws.

Not really sure what the OP is on about

I think the fact that you are whinging about it on a messageboard is the biggest tell. Like the vast majority of people on this board (myself included) you are out of touch with your best days behind you. While Taipei lacks the whoring of Manila, Bangkok or Jakarta, its clubs kick way more ass than any in those cities and it is has a better vibe than Hong Kong or Seoul, and much more fun than KL. I cannot speak for Tokyo, but as far as clubs that stay open late and have a high density of attractive females that might want to get with you and not charge you money, taipei may be king of the hill.

If you wanna fuck about in the Combat Zone you are twenty years too late, if you want to go to Carnegie’s you are ten years too late, hit up Myst, hit up Spark and various other clubs that you cannot wear shorts and flip flops to. You’ll be happy, but you likely don’t have the onions for that and would be better served buying girl drinks and paying bar fines, no shame in that, but sadly Taipei sucks at that game, unless you wanna go hostess KTV, but that can be tricky without a local guide.

I love your posts. Informative, honest and to the point with some dry humor mixed in for good measure. You also have the best avatar and name on the forums!

Don’t take it personally.

The fact is, Taipei sucks in terms of night life. It’s one of the most boring cities I’ve ever lived in in Asia.

I’ll add one more thing: Taiwanese beer is awful. I mean both the brand, Taiwan Beer, and anything else coming out of Taiwan. The beer has something wrong with it or they put some strange chemicals in it. I’ve never had hangovers as bad as I have after drinking Taiwanese beer.

Taipei can be a okay city in which to live and work, although boring, but it’s lame as far as night life and its beer are concerned.

diff strokes for diff folks. Me iv always had fun in taiwan. I see lots of opportunity where you find desert

and yes even taiwan beer (the large bottle original) is good on a hot summer day. Although yes, it will give you one hell of a hangover. Its got RICE in it. Who the hell else has rice in their beer? NOBODY
