I read in the WIki-thing that they’re the second-biggest Olympic-type event in the world. Never EVER seen ANY of it on the TV. Can’t remember ever reading much about them in the papers, which seems strange as they’re held every other year.

So true. When Kaoshiung hosted World Games I was like ‘WTF’? So I looked up on Wiki and, lo-and-behold, the first World Game was held in Santa Clara, California.
I was in Canada at the time when the World Games took place and my dad and I kept trying to find some coverage of it: anywhere. Jesus, not even the 24hour sports channels covered more than a mention.

Does anyone realise that money works out to about 9,000USD per athlete per day?! What the fuck? University Games? I went to several such events in Australia. They were always held in the university basketball stadium and involved the teams that played all their matches in the first two days spending the rest of the week getting blind drunk and trying to crack onto chicks from other universities. If someone will splash out 270,000NTD per day so I can have beer drinking competitions, sing lewd songs and crack onto female volleyball players, I’ll come out of retirement right now and start training for this thing. Hell, at $9,000/day, I could probably afford to as it would cover the cost of an M.A. Do distance degrees count? Will the University of Arizona (or whatever that one is that always advertises online degrees) have a team?

Beach boardwalk? You’re referring to Santa Cruz, my friend, and that’s a drive over the Santa Cruz Mountain via Highway 17. Sudden Impact’s boardwalk scene was filmed there in case you didn’t know about it.
LA proper (especially central) is a dump but the surrounding areas are nice, especially OC. And please don’t get me started on Oaktown and its fine line of former corrupted mayors (with one now in charge of Kaliforn-eye-ai).

All good points, though I still think a lot of cities of CA are more well known or at least have more attention then Santa Clara (the fact i confused it with Santa Cruz may serve as proof). That’s true about Oakland, I forgot because during the last of high school years everybody was concerned about a Richmond incident…mostly because it got parents worried for varies reasons…, I haven’t really been around LA to judge though, I only go to school and occasionally chinatown for boba (i found a wall there that said jackie chan was there for rush hour, not sure if its true though, never bothered to look it up). Although if it is true that these games are second to Olympics, why couldn’t they have chosen are more well-known city for its first game? That’s probably why it only gets a fleeting mention…
I doubt this is true in any meaningful sense. I mean, the Asian Games I have heard of. This, never.
Look at Google too. 3 million search results for the Universiade (and probably a good percentage now coming from Forumosa ) compared with 165 million for the Asian Games.
