Taitung Pros and Cons

I think historically we are just coming full circle with education. The industrial revolution brought about public education, but prior to this most of the human race was homeschooled in some form. That obviously looked very different than today, but people were largely taught skills by those around them in the home and local community environment. Today, through the internet that net of people is much larger and further than what was originally in our local community. My son can learn loads of things which I have little knowledge of due to the internet. I totally agree though. The Coronavirus has really forced the general public to grab hold of what many homeschoolers have been screaming about for years. The term “homeschool” just gives too much the wrong impression, in opinion, of what happens when you don’t mainly attend a public school. It’s more like parental facilitating of education. Completing XYZ topics in a public education system is being exposed as farcical in many ways compared to gaining skills. I’m still mystified why people worry about socialisation so much when “homeschooling.” Sitting in a room relating to children only your same age seems quite artificial. Through facilitating your kids’ education, you have the potential to offer a much wider variety of interaction with people in society which more reflects what life is like. This can include any number of options with or without a public/private school. Anyhow, the new normal offers an opportunity for parents from all backgrounds to tailor education for their child’s benefit and their circumstances. Things are really coming full circle, and maybe those wacko homeschoolers…err…facilitators were onto something after all.

Reviving this thread to add another “pro”: a new program launched at National Taitung University.
