Assuming such a book exists, could someone recommend an English language Taiwan history text. My feeble attempts at finding one have failed.

Look at Caves for Hung Chien-chao’s History of Taiwan. It sells for NT$450. If you like scholarly works, I highly recommend John Shepherd’s Statecraft and Political Economy on the Taiwan Frontier, 1600-1800.
