Taiwan Hypocrisy

Taiwan, the country that can’t stand to be called Chinese despite being being, officially, the Republic of China

But also can’t figure out the capitals of countries whose sovereignty has never been questioned

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Sydney must consider how a Taiwan Strait conflict could affect Australia’s national security

They mean the ship named Sydney of course. The entire Australian government lives on the ship hence the saying “when on Sydney…”

I mean, plenty of people here think New York City is the capital of the US too…even though it’s not even the capital of the state. You would think they’d do a real quick google search before publishing, but so it goes.

Poor education and ignorance doesn’t necessarily equate hypocrisy.

IT’S A TAIWAN NEWS ARTICLE.

We have whole threads about that outlet.

Officially changing the name from Republic of China to RoT or Taiwan is one of the PRC’s red lines. Also, the government isn’t chastising anybody for using the RoC name. Also, that’s a news article, not an official government document. So who exactly is being hypocritical here?

Yes, and if you are going to get the capital of China wrong then its not ‘hypocritical’ but rather ‘internally consistent’ to get the capital of Australia wrong too. It would in fact be ‘hypocritical’ to get the capital of Australia correct!

It’s Auckland right?

This was pre-Australia being a country….

Australia became a country in 1901, and severed its ties with the UK in 1986. But either way its status was never questioned.

What do you mean severed its ties? The head of state is King Charles. It’s a constitutional monarchy.

Severed its ties to the UK, like Canada in 1982.
Canada has Charles as its Head of State; he is the King of Canada. I hear that he has similar status in a group of small rain-swept islands in the North Sea.

Thats like saying you have severed your ties to Nutella when clearly there is chocolate all over your face.

The North Sea… is this a nod to the Shetland independence movement? Or Sealand?

Even after federation in 1901, Australia was not fully sovereign. It was a self-governing dominion within the British Empire, and the British Parliament retained the power to legislate for Australia.
Although Statute of Westminster (1931) granted greater legislative independence, Australia did not adopt it until 1942. Prior to that, there were questions about the extent of Australia’s sovereignty, as British laws still applied in certain cases.
The Australia Act (1986) is seen as the final step in Australia’s legislative independence from the United Kingdom. It ended the remaining legal and constitutional ties, yet some legal scholars still argue about the symbolic ties Australia has with the British monarchy as its head of state.

Never is arguably a strong word to use. Every country has evolved through out the history. Some earlier than others. Painting with a wide brush doesn’t help describe the situation in Australia nor in Taiwan.

As for Taiwan most say there is only one China, only some kowtow to CCP and say Taiwan belongs to the communist rulers.

. . . and others agree that there is one China, and those guys are over there!

Exactly. Everything was clear and had no need to be questioned.

Which is my point.

Taiwan can’t figure itself out continuing living in the grey area and gets offended when others get confused.
But it can’t even get facts right where there is no grey

Reality:
One China, One Taiwan

Officially:

2 competing Chinas

Officially according to China:

There is one China and Taiwan is part of China.

Officially according to Taiwan:
We are the Republic of China (Taiwan). How dare you call me Chinese, that makes no sense. Also Sydney is the capital city of Australia.

Everyone knows it’s Auckland.
