And just when you thought the waters were safe again, along comes the only type of films that (in my opinion) are worse than the Japanese cartoons that Taiwan seems to love.
You are not calling Latino films cute, are you? Syrupy, sentimental, maybe. Or are we talking about Battle Royale/Death Note kind of stuff?
And yes, Taiwanese like magic realism kind of films. But at least it’s a bit more entertaining than, say, the hero of du jour battling the forces of evil in big budget special effects studio films.
Oh, well, to each his/her own. Just another alternative, more variety, some old films, some newer. Some I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole, some I am curious, some I know they are legendary. In Spanish we say: si colores no hubiera, en las tiendas no se vendiera (if people did not like different colors, the stores would not make any sales).
This Friday, December 16, the Mayan Grill will host the official kick-off party for the Taiwan Latino Film Festival 2011. Dignitaries from Latin American embassies and official trade offices, film luminaries, other cultural figures, and members of the media will descend upon the Mayan Grill to enjoy a sumptuous buffet, then will head over to Spot Cinema a few minutes walk down the road to kick off the Festival, which runs through January 6 in Taipei.
We will be open for regular business on our first floor during the event, and are offering 5% off to any customer who shows a ticket stub from the event while the festival runs. Its a rare chance to enjoy some authentic Latin American cuisine, then catch a glimpse of Latin American culture through the eyes of some of their greatest filmmakers in the same evening!
